Partita a senso unico. Italian Cup: Inter, Milan, and Juve get the job done, and the Fiorentina surprise The first game of the quarter finals was played in Milan in the evening of the 8th. Inter took on Roma on their own turf keen to bounce back after the disappointing derby loss. It was Inzaghi’s men who drew first blood early on in the game. After a 1-2 between Perisic and Sanchez left the Croatian open on the left, he was able to calculate his cross and pin the ball on Dzeko’s foot, who just needed to direct it past Rui Patricio. Roma were sleeping in the first ten minutes, and Inter risked doubling their lead twice in the opening minutes, first with Skriniar’s header and then with a rocket shot from Barella, which hit the crossbar. Roma tried to hit back with Abraham nearly forcing an own goal out of D’Ambrosio, and then Zaniolo’s shot that called Handanovic into action. In the second half a shot from Oliviera deflected off Brozovic and nearly caught Handanovic out, but the skipper made a great save and pushed the ball over the bar. Barella tried to pull off another spectacular with a chest control followed by a volley that needed Rui Patricio to steer it wide, then Sanchez decided he might as well show Barella how to score those long range shots and hit a missile from distance that smashed the top left corner. In the final minutes there were two attempts from Lautaro and Perisic, the first high and the second wide. A routine game from Inter, who now get ready to take on Napoli in another scudetto-defining match. The day after Inter and Roma faced off, Milan and Lazio also played each other in another Milano-Rome game. Milan started on the front foot with an early goal from Leao, after Romagnoli slipped him through the defense. Milan’s high press then led to winning many dangerous balls in Lazio’s half, and one of these led to Leao having room to dribble and then square the ball on Giroud’s feet, who just had to push it into the net. To end the half Milan grabbed a third, when Theo Hernandez’s overlapping run put him in position to square the ball to the far post, where Giroud was waiting to tap in again. In the second half Lazio tried to revive the game, but the best they were able to come up with was a weak shot from Pedro and a header from Milinkovic-Savic that was just missed by Patrick to tap in. In the end Milan got the poker. A cross from Maldini fell kindly for Kessie, who volleyed it past Reina. It’ll be Inter-Milan in the semifinals again, so get your popcorn ready. In Bergamo, Atalanta hosted Fiorentina in a match that saw the Bergamaschi as net favorites. Despite this, Fiorentina grabbed the opener after Piatek converted the penalty shot awarded after De Roon stomped on Gonzales’s ankle. Atalanta weren’t gonna go down without a fight. They responded with a lovely curled shot from Zappacosta to grab the equalizer and then went on to take the lead with a solo goal from Boga, reminiscent of Papu Gomez’s dribbling. In the second half Koopmeiners got a clearance all wrong and instead kicked Fiorentina’s Maleh, another penalty. This time Piatek got his shot saved at first, but the rebound was pushed right into his feet by Musso, and all he had to do was tap it in the empty net. Zappacosta nearly bagged a second goal with another curled shot that hit the crossbar, then with 20 minutes still left to play, Martinez Quarta got a second yellow after he took down Muriel from behind. Despite being a man down, Fiorentina gave chase to a winner and with the last kick of the game, Milekovic volleyed a great shot in the far corner, no chance for Musso and Atalanta eliminated. In the post-game conference Gasperini wasn’t happy, as the foul that led to Milenkovic’s goal was doubtful. After Atalanta-Fiorentina, all the eyes shifted to Turin, where Juventus would take on Sassuolo in the last quarter final. Juve got an early lead in the 3’ with their number 10 Paulo Dybala. The Argentine was lucky to have Mckennie’s scuffed shot fall nicely for him, and he was able to steer it around Pegolo acrobatically. Sassuolo responded with a power shot from Berardi after Bonucci’s giveaway, but Perin saved well. Not long after Traore completed a 1-2 with Scamacca at the edge of the box, he then cut back on his right and curled a shot that floated over Perin to equalize the game. In the second half the rhythm of the game was incredibly high. With the teams stretched Vlahovic played Dybala down the flank, who then cut it back for De Ligt, who himself turned and cut it for Mckennie. The American hit the ball well but the post saved Sassouolo. Mckennie got another chance with a wide open header but Pegolo saved and steered the ball wide. Incredibly however, De Ligt was first on the scene and from inside the 6 year box he hit the post when it was basically harder to miss then score. Scamacca gifted a dangerous ball to Vlahovic trying to bounce it back into midfield, and the Serbian sent Morata through, who then tried to chip Pegolo but forced the 40 year old to make another incredible save. Pegolo then saved Rabiot’s deflection off a corner and basically took the ball away from Bonucci, who was waiting for an easy tap-in at the far post. Despite the great performance from the substitute keeper, in the end Vlahovic, played deep by Dybala, used his physicality to get free of his man and then shot the ball against Tressoldi. The deflection carried the ball past Pegolo and won the game for Juve, but it also means Vlahovic will go back to Florence to play Fiorentina, and see all those fans who feel as though their striker betrayed them by joining Juventus.

Milan Derby: a Giroud inspired comeback brings Milan back in the title race The Milan Derby is never a dull game. For one day the city is divided, two colors, two teams, one winner, one loser, united by passion, history, and the city they represent. Inter-Milan is more than a game. The winner gets to “paint” the city in their colors until the next derby. The second derby of this 2021-22 season was won by AC Milan, who, inspired by Giroud, was able to comeback from 1-0 late in the game, thanks to a brace from the Frenchman. Inter went ahead with a goal from Perisic, left unmarked in the box on an Inter corner. The Croatian slotted it home with the inside of his foot after Salamaekers lost him in marking. Inter dominated the first half, besides a long range power-shot from Tonali that called Handanovic into action. Early on there was a chance for Brozovic when his strike was deflected and nearly caught Maignan off guard, then Barella’s volley off Lautaro Martinez’s set flew just wide of the far post. After the goal, a Dumfries one on one situation was handled incredibly well by Maignan once again, denying the wing-back an almost certain goal with a close range save. After the introduction of Brahim Diaz for Kessie in the second half Milan changed pace. In the 75th minute Giroud was able to win a ball off Sanchez in the midfield and quickly counter Inter who had committed numbers forward. The eventual shot from Diaz deflected and fell nicely for Giroud, who having followed up well was able to slot it home. Inter players erupted in protest as they deemed the tackle on Sanchez to have been a foul, but referee Guida was unmoved, having arbitrated the game well up until that point. Not even three minutes later and Giroud was once again the man of the moment, as he received a ball from Calabria with De Vrij on his back but was able to turn free of him and get a shot off to beat Handanovic, who could and should have done better to keep it out. In the last ten Inter pushed forward for an equalizer but it just didn’t happen for them. Theo Hernandez got a red card for a nasty tackle on Dumfries to stop a nerazzurri counter, he’ll miss the next game. Milan then gets a crucial three points that put them right back in contention for the Scudetto. In the post game press conference Inzaghi had remorseful words, a derby he felt was dominated by Inter for 70 minutes was lost undeservingly. Pioli on the other hand riled his troops, the Scudetto dream is still alive.
International Break: Balotelli back in, new call-ups, and youngsters for Mancini’s Azzurri With the playoffs for qualification to the World Cup getting ever closer, Italy’s head coach Mancini has decided to mix up the group from Euro 2020 in order to get a good look at all of his options before making his final decisions. The name on everyone’s mouth is that of Mario Balotelli, returning to the international stage for the first time since 2018. Balotelli, hero of the 2012 Euros that Italy lost in the final against a legendary Spanish team, has always been better known for his off-pitch antics rather than his talent, which he has plenty of. Mancini, who knows Mario the best from their time together at Manchester City, said that “seeing him live can be helpful”. It could also be helpful if Balotelli was able to produce that creativity and quality that Italy lacked in Belfast and in Rome against Switzerland, which cost them a direct ticket to Qatar 2022. Out of the list decided by Mancini, the names of Joao Pedro and Luis Felipe stand out. The players, who have been made available to Mancini by the FIGC thanks to their double passports, have been called up after some good performances with Cagliari and Lazio respectively. Mancini had sweet words for both of the newcomers, saying that Joao Pedro is “technically good, and [he] can fit in this group”. Luis Felipe also received praise from the head coach, who said that he “can have a great future in the Italian national team”. Other than the usual “captains” and heroes of Euro 2020, Mancini decided to throw a bunch of young stars in the mix. Starting from the goalkeepers, Marco Carnesecchi and Alessio Cragno have been called up at the expense of Gigio Donnarumma, who, being the best goalie in the world as of last year, does not need a stage to prove why he should be in the starting line-up. Not much has changed in the defenders who were at Euro 2020, besides Atalanta youngster Scalvini getting a call up for the first time. Bastoni, who was originally called up, was later sent home to spend time with his newborn baby girl. As far as midfielders go, Fagioli, Frattesi, and Ricci are the promising stars that Mancini has opted for. In the list it’s evident that a few names are missing, especially those of Jorginho and Verratti, who are in the same boat as Donnarumma. Besides Balotelli and Joao Pedro, Mancini has gone with the Sassouolo striking partnership of Raspadori and Scamacca. The youngsters are keen on making an impact and get a call up when the time comes for playoffs. Insigne, Immobile, and Berardi were also present; they were starters at Euro 2020. Zaccagni and Zaniolo also got the call this time.
Transfer market: Inter and Juventus commit to big signings, and now they race for Milan’s Kessie. The total sum that Juventus paid to have Fiorentina’s striker Dusan Vlahovic join them is 75 million euros plus bonuses. The 22 year old prodigy is one of the hottest names in the market, having been deemed as one of the most promising young strikers in Europe. Signing the Serbian was never going to be a cheap operation, given that Fiorentina’s president Comisso had told the club to accept no offers below 70 millions. Juve, who have struggled in the attacking department earlier this season, are hoping that Vlahovic can help their fight for a Champions League spot by being prolific. With Chiesa injured, Dybala almost out of contract, and Morata close to joining Barcelona, it seems as though Juventus have invested a lot in signing Vlahovic. Involved in the market are also Julusevski and Bentancur, who look as though they are set to join Tottenham on loan with an obligation to buy. The official announcement by the Bianconeri was released on the morning of the 28th with a picture of Vlahovic alongside the AD Maurizio Arrivabene. The pair were holding Vlahovic’s new jersey, with the number 7, previously owned by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. Robin Gosens arrived in Appiano Gentile and an announcement was released by Inter on the 27th, with the German being interviewed and sounding very excited to be at his new club. His contract is worth 2.5 millions a year plus bonuses, and Atalanta will get 22 millions from Inter in 2023. Gosens has been injured since September, but after his medicals Inter hope to render him available for Inzaghi as early as March. Inter are thinking of the future, as Brozovic’s renewal of his contract, (6 millions + bonuses), has made it impossible for Ivan Perisic to renew his contract, given that Inter can’t satisfy his ask for 6 millions. Inter have then ensured they have found a left wing with as much athleticism and quality as Perisic for when his contract runs out. The two players are similar in playing style, but pairing Gosens natural sense for scoring goals and Inter’s style of play promises good things for both the club and the player. Other than Gosens, Inter are close to signing Genoa’s striker Felipe Caicedo, who will provide Inzaghi with a further striker to rotate during their busy round of fixtures coming up in February, as Tucu Correa has been out injured. Inter and Juve have been the talk of the town after their big moves in the market, but Roma and Milan have also taken steps in improving their squad. Roma have brought in two key players for their fight for fourth spot: Sergio Oliveira and Maitland-Niles from Porto and Arsenal respectively. Milan have signed Lazovic from Red Star. The 18 year old is set to be the heir to Ibrahimovic and Giroud. The latest news finds Inter and Juve go head to head again, this time in an effort to sign Milan’s midfielder Kessie, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season. The Ivorian has also been linked with Barcelona, although no real offer has been made by either of the teams.
Coppa Italia: The Quarter Finals Are Set The Coppa Italia has returned after the winter break, keeping some of Serie A’s best teams busy, as well as Serie B side Lecce, between January 12th and 20th. Atalanta got the job done against Venezia quite comfortably thanks to an early goal from Luis Muriel and a late one by Maehle for a straightforward win. The action was not missed at the Maradona in the match between Napoli and Fiorentina, as the teams combined for a 7 goal tally, with a final result of 5-2 in favor of the Viola. After Vlahovic put Fiorentina ahead, Mertens tied it up thanks to an error from goalkeeper Dragowski. The latter was then sent off in the second half as he committed a costly foul. A man down, Fiorentina was able to, surprisingly, take the lead with a stunning freekick from captain Biraghi. Napoli, chasing a goal desperately, also found themselves down to 10 men after Lozano accumulated two yellow cards. As if things couldn’t get worse, Fabian Ruiz also got a red card in the 93’ minute, courtesy of a tactical foul to stop a Fiorentina counter attack. Incredibly though, Petagna tied the game up with a great volley, despite Napoli playing 9 against 10. In extra time Fiorentina abused their advantage in numbers and they scored three times: Venuti, newly signed Piatek, and Maleh for a final score of 5-2. It’ll be Atalanta-Fiorentina in the quarter finals. In Milano, Milan hosted Genoa, coached by club legend and ballon d’or winner Andriy Scehvchenko. But in a game that promised an easy victory for the Rossoneri, it was Genoa who struck first with Ostigard in the 17’ minute. It would take a late Giroud header to send the game to extra time and keep Milan’s hopes alive, but thanks to a half-cross half-shot from Leao, which sailed over Semper out of position, Milan gained the lead. In the dying minutes Saeleamakers also scored to make it 3-1 for Milan. In Rome, Udinese brought the fight to Lazio, trading chances the entire game but neither team was able to score. In extra time the Udinese defensive wall finally crumbled under the blows of Golden Boot winner Ciro Immobile, who scored a lovely chip after a great cushioned pass from Cataldi put him through on goal. Lazio will travel to Milano to play Milan in the quarter finals. Juventus made life easy for themselves by putting four past Sampdoria. A dominant display saw Cuadrado, Dybala, Rugani, and Morata score. With a tally of 15 shots to 1 it’s evident the game was only ever gonna be won by one team. Juve’s opponent in the quarter finals will be Sassuolo, who triumphed over Cagliari in a fairly even match, thanks to a sole goal from Harroui. The Neroverdi were always the favorite side to win it, but Cagliari played well nonetheless. Sassoulo will want to bring the fight to Juventus next just like they did last October, when the Neroverdi got a historic win in Turin thanks to a late winner from Lopez. At San Siro Empoli were minutes away from knocking the reigning champions of Italy Inter out of the cup. It took a 90 minute equalizer from Ranocchia to send the game to extra time. Inter grabbed the early lead with Sanchez in the 13’ minute with a good header, then they kept creating chances but didn’t convert and ended the first half 1-0. Empoli came out as the better side in the second half and scored an equalizer, thanks to Bajrami, on a counter attack that Inter’s defense fell asleep on. Not long after Empoli scored a second goal after Cutrone’s header bounced off the bar and hit Radu’s feet and then the net, it was all shaping up for an incredible upset. The situation forced Simone Inzaghi to bring out the heavy artillery, as he had rested his starters for this game and played more of the substitutes. The midfield was refreshed with the introduction of Barella, Cahlanoglu, and Perisic. Upfront Lautaro Martinez made way for Edin Dzeko, a bigger target and better aerial threat. Despite the chances created Inter couldn’t seem to find an equalizer, until at the 90’ minute a looping cross from Cahlanoglu was headed by Dzeko in the path of Ranocchia, who shaped up and hit the ball with an overhead kick to send the game to extra time. In extra time Inter played far more comfortably and confidently, rediscovering their form from the first half. But football is a weird game, and who else could score the winner but Stefano Sensi, who was practically a Sampdoria player already. In the end, Inter won 3-2, but they had to work to earn a place in the quarters, perhaps more than Inzaghi would have liked. At the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Roma hosted Serie B side Lecce in the last match of the round of 16. Lecce proved to be a decent match for Roma, who despite playing against an inferior side, opted for a line-up filled with starters. Lecce did in fact take an unexpected lead in the 14’ minute thanks to a header from Calabresi, but was only able to hold on to the advantage for the first half. In the second half Roma tied the game with Kambulla, before Abraham and Shomurodov in the final minutes sealed an overall comfortable win for the Giallorossi. Mourinho will then travel to Milano to face Inter, a team he knows very well, having coached them to a famous Triplete win in 2010. The Coppa Italia will be back in early February, but for now the teams will return to their Serie A fixtures. The highlights of this weekend are Milan-Juventus, Lazio-Atalanta, and the Napoli-Salernitana derby. (English Version Below)
A Point Each The game between Inter and Atalanta in Bergamo shaped up for spectacle, quality football, and a ton of goals in matchday 22 of Serie A. And while fans got to see great spectacle and quality football, the goals were desperately missed. It was Atalanta who got off to a better start, pressing Inter high up the pitch and already making themselves a threat. In the 15’ minute Inter woke up and decided to answer Atalanta's early start, but Dzeko’s unmarked header went wide. Inter grew in confidence, and in the 26’ minute Musso had to pull out a great save on Sanchez’s shot, despite Palomino narrowing the Chilean's angle. Atalanta would rather avoid Inter dominate the play, and they did well to step up at the end of the half and fight back with a header from Italian international Pessina. The shot however was hit too low and Handanovic comfortably saved it. In the second half Pessina got an even better chance. In the 3’ minute Atalanta carved Inter open and Pessina found himself one on one with Handanovic. The inter skipper did incredibly well to save Pessina’s shot with his foot, however the attacker should really have scored. After the early scare Inter grew and started to create chances themselves. Dzeko skied an easy shot, while Pezzella saved Atalanta in extremis by clearing an inviting ball from Dzeko that Darmian was ready to tap in the open net. In the 25’ minute Barella swung one to the back post where Dumfires was arriving late. Perfect cushioned header to set up Dzeko, who connects well but hits it over the bar. In the 30’ minute Vidal let one fly from the edge of the box, but having his angles cut out from Demiral and Palomino, he had no choice but to shove it down Musso’s throat, and make it an easy save for him in the end. In the 33’ minute Atalanta tried a back-door cross of their own, where Muriel and Pasalic were waiting. The latter connected well but his header was blocked by Dumfries, saving Inter yet again. In the 35’ minute Muriel anticipated Bastoni after the ball was cleared from Atalanta’s box. He then raced away towards Inter’s net with Skriniar chasing. The Slovak couldn’t prevent the shot, but he did well to cover the far post. Muriel picked his spot and hit it low on the front post, but Handanovic made yet another great save to deny the Colombian. Shortly after Pasalic had a double chance. The first was better than the second, but both were saved by Handanovic, the MVP of tonight. In the final 10 minutes it was all Inter. A quick passage of play between Dumfries and Barella opened up space for D’Ambrosio, who got the return ball from Barella with a cheeky backheel pass. Onside and wide open, D’Ambrosio had to score, but in the end he got it all wrong and hit the side netting. It would be the last chance of the game. At the end of a battle there is always a count. Atalanta gained one point, matched and at times surpassed the champions of Italy, and did it without 6 of their starters. Inter also gained one point on a difficult turf, away from home, and against a dreaded opponent in their third game in a week. They could’ve won, like Atalanta, but they didn’t. Cruyff said that those who make the fewer mistakes win. Evidently Inzaghi and Gasperini didn’t want any differences between them tonight. The real winner? Italian football. The two teams tonight demonstrated the growth of Serie A as a tournament by displaying modern and exciting football, along with great agonism and much respect. Compliments also go out to Napoli, who shared on their social media that they would like to congratulate Inter and Atalanta for having played a great game, and showing spectacular and honest football. Italian Supercup: Inter beat rivals Juventus thanks to a late winner by Sanchez Simone Inzaghi’s Inter is the winner of the first trophy of 2022, the Nerazzuring were triumphant over rivals Juventus in the final thanks to an Alexis Sanchez goal in the dying minutes of extra time. The game was extremely intense, but neither team was able to prevail in the regular 90 minutes. Juventus went ahead with a Mckennie header, but Inter quickly responded with a penalty earned by Dzeko and converted by “El Toro” Lautaro Martinez. Inter, who were so cynical in possession, created a lot of chances in the second half, but both headers from Denzel Dumfries and Martinez met Perin’s safe hands, who played an excellent game. Juventus on the other hand were very solid defensively, and played quickly on the counter attack when Inter lost possession. They were able to control and stop Inter’s impressive attack that has been a nightmare for many other teams in Serie A. Juve’s goal game from a counter attack, and they nearly had a second in the early minutes of the second half as a low driven cross from the left crossed Inter’s area without any defenders clearing the ball and fell nicely at the feet of Bernardeschi, who despite being wide open shot the ball wide. Both Allegri and Inzaghi tried to help their teams and change the dynamic of the game by introducing some substitutions. Without the injured Federico Chiesa, Juventus struggled a lot to be creative in Inter’s half, and it forced Allegri to play the Dybala card. The Argentine did not however make an impact on the game as desired by his coach. Inzaghi himself tried to change the game by substituting the front two of Dzeko and Martinez with Sanchez and Correa. Sanchez had an amazing opportunity to close the game in extra time when he was left completely open in the box by De Sciglio on a corner kick, however, his header was wide by a fraction. With both teams practically ready to go to penalties, the impossible happened. At the 119’ minute Juve’s midfielder Bentancur was trying to press Di Marco on the left flank to put the ball in touch and allow Bonucci to be substituted in the game to take a penalty. The Inter left back anticipated the Uruguayan’s tackle and completed a quick one-two with teammate Bastoni, finding himself in open space. He then attempted a cross on the far post for Darmian, arriving late. The cross was mishit, however, defender Alex Sandro attempted to chest the ball for Perin to pick up but messed up his touch, allowing Darmian to anticipate Chiellini’s clearance and leave the ball for Alexis Sanchez, who having followed the development of play took a touch of his chest and sank the ball past Perin. At this point, San Siro erupted in joy, as Sanchez ran to the fans while taking his shirt off, followed by all his teammates in celebration. With this win, Inter has sent a clear message: they are still the team to beat, given that Inzaghi has created a group with character and ambition who play |
