FROM OUR PRESIDENT
ROSANN NANCI

President’s Message Spring 2022
Ciao a tutti! It’s been a long time since we “chatted”. It’s been a very busy time for the board of KCIC as they have been hard at work on your behalf either strengthening our strategic plan; creating some financial goals; or liaising with other organizations such as the National Congress of Italian Canadians (NCIC) of BC so we can keep abreast of what is happening in the Italian Community throughout BC and Canada.
We have been slowly moving into some club events as we begin to re-engage our membership and our volunteers. We do this slowly as we are still under a pandemic situation, however we have taken steps to re-opening some of our events with more to come!
As many of you know, we have had two take out dinners through the clubhouse. First one in April which was a great fundraiser to show support for our friends in Ukraine. We were able to send a donation of $5000.00 to the Ukrainian National Congress to help with humanitarian relief in Ukraine and help to settle refuges here in Canada. So proud of our crew of volunteers who pumped out over 300 pasta meals! That’s a lot of meatballs my friend! Thanks as well to Glenmore Pharmasave and BC Tree Fruits who donated product to the event – and to all those people who made cash contributions. Mille Grazie!
The second take out was May 6th. A smaller event which kind of replaces the monthly dinners for now as we work through the limitations due to COVID 19. We sold approximately 185 meals, but also sent 25 meals to Joanna’s House for the family members staying there while looking after loved ones in Kelowna General Hospital. We also submitted a $200 donation to the Hub Family Services here in Kelowna.
May 13th was our first social event in which about 28 people came down to the clubhouse and were able to visit with friends; all the while enjoying some pretty amazing appetizers and wine. I’d like to thank Rosy and Jason Agostino of Mervyns’ The Body Shop for sponsoring and hosting the event. It was a very nice evening in which we all caught up on the latest. Una bella serata per tutti! We hope to do these socials more often. If you are interested in hosting an event, please let us know!
Our upcoming event is one of our most popular... Giuseppe’s Café is on May 26. We hope to be able to visit with some of our oldest members who enjoy a midday outing. And we are gearing up for a new event to celebrate the start of Italian Heritage Month here in BC. On June 4, 2022, we will host a “Festa Della Repubblica Italiana” event which is a social evening but also a chance for Italians in our community to celebrate the day Italy became a republic (and it wasn’t in ancient Roman days – it was in the 1870’s!). Come learn more about this relatively new event.
There are so many other events to take part in. I’m sure you will find something that interests you from Bocce to Cooking Class registrations, and Folkfest, etc. It’s all coming on board so please go through the newsletter and check out our calendar of events on our website www.kelownaitalianclub.com ! We would love to see you there! Register early as there are space constraints to most events.
As always, I’d like to thank you all for your continued support. Your participation in our events ensures they continue. Thank you to the volunteers who have all stepped up and worked the events so far. Don’t be shy if you want to be involved please contact the kcicevents@shaw.ca email address and put your name forward. We are looking for people who have IT knowledge to help out in various areas.
And finally, a big thank you to the board, trustees and committee heads who have been working tirelessly to bring events to fruition and basically run the club. We see you and we truly appreciate all that you do. Vi ringraziamo per tutto che fai per noi. E tanto apprezatto.
For you gardeners out there... the nonnos say that when the snow is off the hills you can plant your garden. Hopefully after this weekend we can all plant our tomatoes. There will be peace in the land once they are planted. In boca al’lupo!
