Crisi Inter: un’analisi

In Coppa Italia il derby tra Milan e Inter è finito 0-0. In circostanze normali, questo sarebbe un risultato apprezzato da entrambe le squadre, un punto ciascuno e testa alla prossima. Il problema che rende le circostanze non normali è che l’Inter non segna da 403 minuti. 

L’ultima rete segnata dai Nerazzurri risale al 12 febbraio con il pareggio segnato da Dzeko al Maradona contro il Napoli, in una partita in cui gli uomini di Inzaghi hanno creato molto poco. 

Da quel gol sono passate quattro partite con un totale di 66 tiri senza gonfiare la rete, e anche stasera nel derby l'Inter ha creato veramente poco. L’attacco interista metteva a segno 2.6 gol a partita prima di Natale, e a dirla tutta sembra che la crisi sia partita da quella rimonta subito in campionato nel derby contro il Milan. 

L’Attacco

Lautaro Martinez era uno degli attaccanti più quotati in Serie A dopo il trionfo dell’Inter di Conte l’anno scorso. Il Lautaro di oggi è un’ombra di quello dell’anno scorso, e una crisi di gol che manca all’argentino dal 17 dicembre si è trasformata in una crisi esistenziale per il giocatore, che sembra aver perso se stesso nel campo, incapace di tenere il gioco e sprecando quasi tutti i palloni nel derby.

Dzeko ha segnato dei gol importantissimi per l’Inter questa stagione, ma anche lui sembra inceppato e stanco. Il cigno di Sarajevo ce la mette sempre tutta, lavorando come pochi nel rettangolo verde, ma manca lo spunto che chiude le partite che l'attaccante bosniaco aveva spesso portato nel repertoire. 

Sanchez non ha più trovato quella imprevedibilità che ha avuto partendo spesso dalla panchina. Negli ultimi mesi il cileno si è giocato il posto da titolare con Lautaro, ma ultimamente anche con 90 minuti a disposizione non è riuscito a impattare la partita. 

Il Centrocampo

Il tridente Brozovic-Barella-Calhanoglu è un mix perfetto di difesa, palleggio, e magia. Brozovic è stato impeccabile nel tenere il tempo del gioco interista e rubare palloni pericolosi, mentre Barella ha aggiunto polmoni, grinta, e magia, per lasciare spazio a Calha di inventare e finalizzare il gioco. 

Anche loro però sono umani, e i ritmi sono decisamente calati rispetto alla prima metà dell’anno. Brozovic e Barella hanno perso quella consistenza che garantiva all’Inter di dominare il centrocampo e imporre il loro gioco, e Calha sembra aver perso confidenza nelle sue abilità, spesso commettendo errori e sbagliando la decisione cruciale nella trequarti avversaria. 

Il Gioco

Il gioco interista balla sulle corse di Perisic e Dumfries (Darmian, Di Marco) per arrivare sul fondo e sfruttare cross pericolosi in area. Ultimamente però Perisic è stato marcato stretto dagli avversari, avendo capito che è lui l’uomo pericoloso, e dall’altra parte a Dumfries manca la qualità del croato. 

Spesso però l’Inter non è più riuscito a partire dal basso e costruire attraverso il centro campo, ciò che rende difficile la vita delle fasce che devono sempre scegliere se partire o restare in caso il pallone sia perso. 

Dominare il centrocampo e usare Dzeko e Lautaro per cucire il gioco deve funzionare se l’Inter vuole usare la velocità di Perisic e Dumfries negli spazi larghi, e ultimamente questo passaggio è diventato difficile per l’Inter. Sia la fatica, la confidenza o qualcos’altro, ma il gioco non è più quello di prima. 

La Difesa

Difensivamente l’Inter rimane solida. Skriniar, De Vrij e Bastoni fanno passare poco, pochissimo, e anche se De Vrij sembrava in calo dopo il derby perso effettivamente per un suo errore su Giroud, sembra aver ritrovato la forma. 

Una buona difesa senza attacco è buona solo per i pareggi, e a furia di andare avanti a un punto alla volta l’Inter si è ritrovata in terzo posto dietro a Napoli e Milan. E dopo la sconfitta col Liverpool, con un piede fuori dalla Champions. 

La Soluzione

Ritrovare se stessi, partendo dai singoli. Il lavoro di un allenatore sta anche in questo. Inzaghi ha bisogno di ritrovare i suoi giocatori e iniettare confidenza nella squadra, partendo dall’attacco e passando per il centrocampo. Perché a calcio si gioca in 11, ma come diceva Sir Alex Ferguson, si vince quando almeno otto giocatori giocano bene, perché è impossibile che in undici giochino perfettamente, e ultimamente l’Inter fatica a trovare i suoi otto per vincere. 


Crisis at Inter: An Analysis

In the Coppa Italia the Derby between Milan and Inter finished 0-0. In normal circumstances this would be a much appreciated result for either side, as both would gather a point and move onto the next game. However, the circumstances of this game were not normal at all, as this game marks 403 minutes of football since Inter last scored a goal. 

The last goal scored by the Nerazzurri was back on February 12th in their match against Napoli at the Maradona, when Dzeko equalized for Inter in a game where they didn’t create many chances. 

Since that goal it has been four games in which Inter have failed to find the back of the net with a tally of 66 shots, and in the Derby Inter created little to nothing. The Inter attack that used to score 2.6 goals per game on average before Christmas is now long gone, and it seems that the whole of the crisis can be traced back to the comeback suffered against Milan in the league Derby.

The Attack 

Lautaro Martinez was one of the most fascinating strikers of Serie A last year after Inter won the Scudetto. However, the Lautaro of this year is a ghost compared to himself last season. The goal crisis that saw the Argentine not scoring since the 17th of December has not erupted into a proper existential crisis, in which the players seems to have lost himself and can’t find his feet or his game on the field. 

Dzeko has scored some super important goals for Inter during this campaign, but he seems bagged and worked to the maximum out there. The Bosnian always gives his all, working as hard as few in the green rectangle, but he’s been missing that crucial spark that settles games that he had in his repertoire. 

Sanchez has not been able to find that flair which he had coming off the bench and that took many teams by surprise. The Chilean has been battling Lautaro for a starting spot, but even with the full 90’ at his disposal he hasn’t been able to impact the game as he did before. 

The Midfield

The three-pair Brozovic-Barella-Cahlanoglu is a perfect mix of defensive stability, possession, and magic. Brozovic has been close to perfect for Inter in keeping the rhythm of the game and stealing possession back, while Barella added the run and grit, and Calhanoglu the flair. 

They too are human though, and the rhythm of Inter’s midfield has definitely slowed down in the second half of the season. Brozovic and Barella have lost their consistency that guaranteed Inter a solid foundation to dominate the midfield and impose their game, while Chalanoglu appears to have lost his confidence in his abilities, too often mistaking the final decision and the crucial pass. 

The Style of Play

Inter’s style of play relies heavily on the runs of Perisic and Dumfries (Darmian, Di Marco), to get deep down the flanks and put dangerous balls in the box. Lately however, Perisic has been getting marked tightly by opponents who have figured he’s the danger man, and on the other side Dumfries lacks certain qualities that the Croatian has. 

Often though Inter have not been able to build from the back and play through the midfield, which makes life difficult for the wing-backs who always have to gamble on whether to get higher or hold position to prevent a counter attack. 

Dominating the midfield and using Lautaro and Dzeko to link the play has to work for Inter if they are to use Perisic and Dumfries for pace on the outside, and lately this fundamental passage has become difficult for Inter. May it be fatigue, or lack of confidence, of whatever else, but the style of play is not the same as before. 

The Defense

Defensively Inter remains solid. Skriniar, De Vrij, and Bastoni let little past their guard, and even though De Vrij has been on a low after his mistake against Giroud in the derby, he seems to have gotten his form back. 

A good defense without an attack is only good for ties, and tie after tie Inter found themselves in third place behind Napoli and Milan, and after losing to Liverpool, with a foot out of the Champions League as well. 

The Solution

Re-find themselves, starting from the individuals. The work of a manager is also this, Inzaghi needs to find his players and inject them with confidence in the team, starting from the attack and then the midfield. Because in soccer you play with 11 players, and as Sir Alex Ferguson said, you win when 8 players play well, because it’s impossible that 11 men have the perfect day at the same time. Lately though, Inter have been struggling to find their eight to win.
