Olivier Giroud (front and centre) is mobbed by his teammates after scoring one of his two goals against Inter in the Milan derby.

Milan Derby: a Giroud inspired comeback brings Milan back in the title race

The Milan Derby is never a dull game. For one day the city is divided, two colors, two teams, one winner, one loser, united by passion, history, and the city they represent. Inter-Milan is more than a game. The winner gets to “paint” the city in their colors until the next derby.

The second derby of this 2021-22 season was won by AC Milan, who, inspired by Giroud, was able to comeback from 1-0 late in the game, thanks to a brace from the Frenchman.

Inter went ahead with a goal from Perisic, left unmarked in the box on an Inter corner. The Croatian slotted it home with the inside of his foot after Salamaekers lost him in marking.

Inter dominated the first half, besides a long range power-shot from Tonali that called Handanovic into action. Early on there was a chance for Brozovic when his strike was deflected and nearly caught Maignan off guard, then Barella’s volley off Lautaro Martinez’s set flew just wide of the far post. After the goal, a Dumfries one on one situation was handled incredibly well by Maignan once again, denying the wing-back an almost certain goal with a close range save.

After the introduction of Brahim Diaz for Kessie in the second half Milan changed pace. In the 75th minute Giroud was able to win a ball off Sanchez in the midfield and quickly counter Inter who had committed numbers forward. The eventual shot from Diaz deflected and fell nicely for Giroud, who having followed up well was able to slot it home.

Inter players erupted in protest as they deemed the tackle on Sanchez to have been a foul, but referee Guida was unmoved, having arbitrated the game well up until that point.

Not even three minutes later and Giroud was once again the man of the moment, as he received a ball from Calabria with De Vrij on his back but was able to turn free of him and get a shot off to beat Handanovic, who could and should have done better to keep it out.

In the last ten Inter pushed forward for an equalizer but it just didn’t happen for them. Theo Hernandez got a red card for a nasty tackle on Dumfries to stop a nerazzurri counter, he’ll miss the next game.

Milan then gets a crucial three points that put them right back in contention for the Scudetto.

In the post game press conference Inzaghi had remorseful words, a derby he felt was dominated by Inter for 70 minutes was lost undeservingly. Pioli on the other hand riled his troops, the Scudetto dream is still alive.
