Ruslan Malinovsky mostra il messaggio di solidarietà dopo aver segnato | Ruslan Malinovsky shows solidarity after scoring

War and Sports

The war in Ukraine started by Russia is a failure. It’s a failure for the people of Ukraine, who found themselves under attack for no fault of their own, witnessing death and destruction in their country. It’s a failure to the youth, who have barely had the time to recover from the years lost in the pandemic before witnessing the start of a war. It’s a failure to the world, because wars aren’t the latest inventions, we know them far too well. War isn’t like sports because in the end there is no winner.

But the world of sports didn’t wait to make a statement. Many were the messages from the world of football, but they all had the same intent: Stop the war.

UEFA officially declared that the Champions League final has been switched from Saint Petersburg to Paris. Also, all home games of teams from Ukraine or Russia will be played on a neutral field.

Formula 1 didn’t wait either. They released an official statement on social media announcing that the Sochi Grand Prix, scheduled for September, has been taken off the calendar, after the teams, drivers, and FIA had a meeting.

Seria A decided to start their games 5 minutes late this weekend to protest. Slavia Praga walked out of the tunnel wearing Ukraine’s national team’s kit on top of them ahead of their game against Fenerbahce. Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovsky showed the cameras an undershirt with a clear message after his brace in the Europa League: No war in Ukraine.

The solidarity posts on social media are thousands if not millions by now. The world of sports and the rest of the world are united to stand against the war, knowing that strength lies in unity.
