This is an initiative led by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, the Italian Trade Agency ICE, the associations of chambers of commerce Unioncamere and Assocamerestero and more.

This year in Vancouver, the Consulate General of Italy, in collaboration with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada-West, ITA-Italian Trade Commission in Toronto and the Italian Cultural Centre, presents a few events that will be carried out in compliance with existing COVID 19-related restrictions

ONLINE COOKING SHOW and “SORPRESA! MYSTERY BOXES”

Picture
THURSDAY, NOV. 26, 5:30PM (PST)
Online

In partnership with local grocery stores in BC and AB, the Italian Chamber of Commerce has designed a Mystery Box named Sorpresa! (Surprise) for all those who love Italy and its culinary traditions. The Mystery Boxes include a selection of fine foods to prepare an Italian aperitivo and dinner. By buying the Sorpresa! box, consumers will learn new Italian recipes and how to use the products in their box to surprise their guests during the upcoming Holidays.
On November 26th, a free online cooking show will take place at 5.30pm (PST), led by Chef Alessandro from Mangia Cucina Restaurant (Vancouver). Chef Alessandro will showcase a selection of recipes to create the perfect Holidays menu and guide you through a virtual tour to an Italian winery to learn about the most exciting wines to accompany his menu.
Participants who have purchased the Sorpresa! mystery box will receive a preview of the recipe before the event, and will be able to use the ingredients from the box to make the recipe at home, following Chef Alessandro’s live advice.

The celebrations for the Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel Mondo will be rounded up by yet another initiative of the Italian Chamber of Commerce: “Italian Restaurant Weeks” is a special promotion that comprises a selection of restaurants and gelaterie located in Vancouver and Calgary. All participating restaurants during the 2- week promotion (November 16th-30th) will be featuring a new item on their menu (a first course, a second course, or even a two-course meal) or an old-time favourite at a special price. Italian Cultural Centre – Grand Ballroom
3075 Slocan Street, Vancouver

On the occasion of the 5th Week of Italian Cuisine in the World (November 23-29, 2020), the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver and Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre present an evening celebrating the excellence of Italian cuisine and one of its most popular elements - pasta. This special evening will feature the creations of Maestro Pastaio, Chef Sergio Cinti, who will prepare a 4-course dinner featuring three pasta dishes from traditional recipes spanning from the north to the south of the Italian peninsula. The event will also include an educational component demonstrating how to make pasta from scratch, following the Italian culinary tradition; how to recognize authentic Italian products and their fake counterparts in north-American markets; and, finally, where to find authentic Italian products in Vancouver’s markets.  ENNIO MORRICONE TRIBUTE DINNER - CANCELLED UNtil further notice

Picture
THURSDAY, DEC. 3, 7:00PM
Italian Cultural Centre – Grand Ballroom
3075 Slocan Street, Vancouver

There is little doubt that Ennio Morricone (1928-2020) was a top-level expression of Italian musical genius: the soundtracks he composed for masterpiece cinematic works such as “Cinema Paradiso” or “The Mission” are unforgettable.

To honour the memory of the late Academy Award recipient, Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre proposes an evening inspired by Morricone’s immortal music for the “spaghetti western” films by Sergio Leone, such as “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”: the menu will reflect that tradition, while Maestro Cos Natola will delight the audience by narrating episodes of the Maestro’s life and by playing live some of his most celebrated tunes.

This event is made possible by the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver.

BEGINS NOVEMBER 1
The Cinematheque
1131 Howe Street, Vancouver

The Cinematheque celebrates the centennial of Federico Fellini (1920–1993), one of cinema’s boldest and most beloved maestros, with an extensive retrospective featuring many new restorations. By the mid 1960s, Fellini had attained worldwide fame  for an extraordinary series of free-wheeling, flamboyant, dazzlingly creative films rooted in memory, dream, desire, and fantasy. In the English-speaking world, few filmmakers were more synonymous with the international “art" cinema. The sheer audacity of the imagination at play is simply undeniable — as the works in this retrospective demonstrate time and again. The Cinematheque's retrospective continues in December. Don't miss the chance to see Fellini’s masterpieces on the big screen!

LA DEA FORTUNA (“THE GODdESS OF FORTUNE”) BY FERZAN ÖZPETEK AT THE EUROPEAN UNION FILM FESTIVAL 2020

11/2/2020

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14 - Online

Picture
The Canadian Film Institute, the European Union Film Festival in Toronto, and The Cinematheque in Vancouver have joined forces with the Delegation of the European Union and the Embassies and Consulates of EU Member States to present the first-ever online edition of the European Union Film Festival (EUFF) in Canada, featuring 27 films from as many EU countries, running November 13 to 29, 2020.
Italy will be represented by Ferzan Özpetek's multi-award winner latest film, La dea fortuna, starring Jasmine Trinca, Edoardo Leo and Stefano Accorsi. The film will be available for 48 hours starting Saturday, November 14.
Alessandro and Arturo have been together for over fifteen years. Despite the strong feelings they still have for each other, their relationship seems to have entered that dreaded middle-aged crisis stage as they both near the age of fifty. Into this already fraught and fragile situation bursts Alessandro’s best friend and former lover, Annamaria. She arrives unexpectedly and asks them to take care of her two kids for a few days, as she is being admitted to a hospital due to recurring headaches.
By turns amusing, tender, and tough-minded, The Goddess of Fortune features finely tuned performances and a witty, observant, sometimes trenchant script that probes the intensities and ironies of contemporary Italian mores.
Italy, 2019, 114 min., in Italian with English subtitles.

ITALIAN DESIGN DAY 2020“Proximity vs Social Distancing”: A Conversation with Arch. Francesco Fresa of Piuarch

10/24/2020

Picture
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 12:00 NOON
Online Webinar

"According to us, architecture is the space that is created between one building and another. Indeed, what is more important is how much it is able of generating with its shape, shadow and silhouette in an urban space. The latter is a crucial theme for the future of design, however contradicted by Covid-19 which sanctioned a new verb, to social distance: living urban space by measures.
Now that we have returned to live in the city but under the aegis of restrictions, what will be the new “rituals” of shared life? It will be necessary to rethink cities by redefining the concept of proximity as an alternative to social distancing. Even in design, we believe it is right to start from human interaction, an essential value of our lives, no matter how smart we want to imagine them." (Arch. Francesco Fresa)

The 4th edition of the “Italian Design Day” is presented in Vancouver by the Consulate General of Italy in cooperation with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada West and Piuarch, after a worldwide initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in collaboration with MiBACT, MISE, ICE Agenzia, Confindustria, Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI), Fondazione ADI-Compasso d'Oro, Federlegno Arredo, Salone del Mobile Milano and Triennale Milano.

After graduating in Architecture from the University of Rome, in 1986 Francesco Fresa moved to Berlin, where he worked until 1991. From 1991 to 1996 he worked with Gregotti Associati, for whom he was responsible for projects and construction sites in Germany and managed relations with German clients and government, in particular those based in Berlin, Hamburg and Leipzig. He founded Piuarch in 1996 together with Germán Fuenmayor, Gino Garbellini and Monica Tricario. As a partner of the firm, his work focuses primarily on the management of international projects, with particular regard to urban regeneration plans, residential complexes, office and retail buildings.

Picture
SEPTEMBER 24 – OCTOBER 7
Online

The 2020 edition of the Vancouver International Film Festival will take place via VIFF Connect, which is the Festival’s new online streaming platform. Among the 100+ titles featured in this year’s Festival, a handful are important Italian productions or co-productions, presented in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy and with the assistance of Il Centro - Italian Cultural Centre. The Italian section of VIFF 2020 includes:

HAMMAMET: Gianni Amelio’s semi-biographical drama about Bettino Craxi, leader of the Italian Socialist Party (1976-1993) and Prime Minister of Italy from 1983 till 1987. The film traces Craxi’s final months with his family at his oasis villa in Hammamet, Tunisia, where he fled to avoid prison for crimes of bribery and corruption. Under a heavy layer of prosthetics, veteran actor Pierfrancesco Favino (star of Bellocchio’s The Traitor) masterfully embodies Craxi’s larger-than-life persona, employing a repertoire of nuanced gestures while commanding the screen with appropriate hauteur.
Italy, 2019, Italian with English subtitles

SARITA: Sergio Basso’s touching “educational musical” revolving around 13-year-old Sarita, a Lhotshampa girl persecuted by Bhutanese police and living in a refugee camp in Nepal (Italy/Germany, 2019, Nepali with English subtitles). As a  special introduction to the film, an interview in English with director Sergio Basso (currently in Vancouver), presented by Il Centro - Italian Cultural Centre, will be available for viewing through Il Centro’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ilcentrovan) as of VIFF’s opening day.

BAD TALES (Favolacce): the D’Innocenzo brothers’ contemporary fable about the lives of four deferential schoolchildren in a suburban Roman community.
Italy/Switzerland, 2020, Italian with English subtitles

HERE WE ARE: Nir Bergman’s soulful drama about a stubborn, proud, aging divorcé and his autistic son.
Israel/Italy, 2020, Hebrew with English subtitles

SIBERIA: Abel Ferrara’s 2020 work showing him at his most undiluted, drowning viewers in potent imagery and crude poetry drawn from the tormented psyche of one of modern cinema’s greatest madmen, starring Willem Dafoe.
Italy/Germany/Mexico, 200, English
