To honour the memory of the late Academy Award recipient, Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre proposes an evening inspired by Morricone’s immortal music for the “spaghetti western” films by Sergio Leone, such as “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”: the menu will reflect that tradition, while Maestro Cos Natola will delight the audience by narrating episodes of the Maestro’s life and by playing live some of his most celebrated tunes. BEGINS NOVEMBER 1 The Cinematheque 1131 Howe Street, Vancouver The Cinematheque celebrates the centennial of Federico Fellini (1920–1993), one of cinema’s boldest and most beloved maestros, with an extensive retrospective featuring many new restorations. By the mid 1960s, Fellini had attained worldwide fame for an extraordinary series of free-wheeling, flamboyant, dazzlingly creative films rooted in memory, dream, desire, and fantasy. In the English-speaking world, few filmmakers were more synonymous with the international “art" cinema. The sheer audacity of the imagination at play is simply undeniable — as the works in this retrospective demonstrate time and again. The Cinematheque's retrospective continues in December. Don't miss the chance to see Fellini’s masterpieces on the big screen!

Online Webinar "According to us, architecture is the space that is created between one building and another. Indeed, what is more important is how much it is able of generating with its shape, shadow and silhouette in an urban space. The latter is a crucial theme for the future of design, however contradicted by Covid-19 which sanctioned a new verb, to social distance: living urban space by measures. Now that we have returned to live in the city but under the aegis of restrictions, what will be the new “rituals” of shared life? It will be necessary to rethink cities by redefining the concept of proximity as an alternative to social distancing. Even in design, we believe it is right to start from human interaction, an essential value of our lives, no matter how smart we want to imagine them." (Arch. Francesco Fresa) The 4th edition of the “Italian Design Day” is presented in Vancouver by the Consulate General of Italy in cooperation with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada West and Piuarch, after a worldwide initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in collaboration with MiBACT, MISE, ICE Agenzia, Confindustria, Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI), Fondazione ADI-Compasso d'Oro, Federlegno Arredo, Salone del Mobile Milano and Triennale Milano. Online The 2020 edition of the Vancouver International Film Festival will take place via VIFF Connect, which is the Festival’s new online streaming platform. Among the 100+ titles featured in this year’s Festival, a handful are important Italian productions or co-productions, presented in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy and with the assistance of Il Centro - Italian Cultural Centre. The Italian section of VIFF 2020 includes: HAMMAMET: Gianni Amelio’s semi-biographical drama about Bettino Craxi, leader of the Italian Socialist Party (1976-1993) and Prime Minister of Italy from 1983 till 1987. The film traces Craxi’s final months with his family at his oasis villa in Hammamet, Tunisia, where he fled to avoid prison for crimes of bribery and corruption. Under a heavy layer of prosthetics, veteran actor Pierfrancesco Favino (star of Bellocchio’s The Traitor) masterfully embodies Craxi’s larger-than-life persona, employing a repertoire of nuanced gestures while commanding the screen with appropriate hauteur. Italy, 2019, Italian with English subtitles SARITA: Sergio Basso’s touching “educational musical” revolving around 13-year-old Sarita, a Lhotshampa girl persecuted by Bhutanese police and living in a refugee camp in Nepal (Italy/Germany, 2019, Nepali with English subtitles). As a special introduction to the film, an interview in English with director Sergio Basso (currently in Vancouver), presented by Il Centro - Italian Cultural Centre, will be available for viewing through Il Centro’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ilcentrovan) as of VIFF’s opening day. BAD TALES (Favolacce): the D’Innocenzo brothers’ contemporary fable about the lives of four deferential schoolchildren in a suburban Roman community. Italy/Switzerland, 2020, Italian with English subtitles HERE WE ARE: Nir Bergman’s soulful drama about a stubborn, proud, aging divorcé and his autistic son. Israel/Italy, 2020, Hebrew with English subtitles SIBERIA: Abel Ferrara’s 2020 work showing him at his most undiluted, drowning viewers in potent imagery and crude poetry drawn from the tormented psyche of one of modern cinema’s greatest madmen, starring Willem Dafoe. Italy/Germany/Mexico, 200, English (Text: viff.org, adapted) For info and tickets, please visit https://www.viff.org/Online/default.asp ![]() On the day when we celebrate the Festa della Musica (June 21), the new "Estate all'Italiana Festival" is launched this year -- a unique showcase of all major Italian music and performing arts summer festivals for the 2020 season.
