Messi Leaves Barcelona

Messi leaves Barcelona

After 21 years of making history and winning trophies, Lionel Messi will not play in a Barcelona shirt for the first time since he was 13 years old.

The shocking separation between club and player is the ripple effect of Barcelona’s financial issues in the past few years and the salary cap imposed by La Liga on the participating teams. Messi’s wages are a massive fee to cover yearly, as they should be, but due to the latest signings of Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero, Barca was unable to make it all work financially, despite Messi willing to take half the original salary discussed.

The official announcement was sent out by the club on all social media platforms, and it immediately caused shock and panic among journalists, critics, and general fans. At first it was all about the memories of Messi playing for Barca, but that inevitably turned into speculation as to where the arguably best player in the history of the sport would play in September.

The first rumours linked Messi with PSG with a monster contract of 35 to 40 million euros yearly but Manchester City and Chelsea also seemed plausible options for Messi. However, City had just signed Aston Villa’s talent Jack Grealish for 117 million euros, and Chelsea had been heavily linked with Lukaku for a fee of 130 million, meaning that their budget would not be as inviting as PSG’s.

Messi himself remained quiet on social media until he announced that he would be holding a press conference at the Camp Nou on August 8th, where he would explain in detail all the background issues to the contract negotiations.

“I have never imagined this goodbye, I didn’t know it would be like this”, said Messi in tears. “My new contract was ready and I wanted to stay”, he explained, “but I couldn’t sign because of the La Liga rules”.
It’s a shame Messi couldn’t say goodbye to the fans either, to whom he has brought so much joy and created so many memories during the years. “I imagined I would leave with a full stadium saying goodbye to everyone”, he said.

After Leo finished talking, a long applause rose from the crowd of players and staff that were in the room. An applause worth more than a thousand words, followed by pictures and hugs with all the friends.

True fans wish all the best for Messi going forward in his amazing career, wherever that may be.
