Doppio DNF e 0 punti guadagnati in un altro weekend da incubo per la Ferrari. Il primo a ritirarsi è stato Sainz, che dopo aver perso il passo dei primi tre davanti si è fermato alla quarta curva annunciando un guasto meccanico alla radio.

Leclerc invece, che essendosi fermato al decimo giro per le dure aveva ereditato il primo posto dopo i pit stops delle Red Bull, ha avvertito del fumo uscire dal posteriore della F1-75 mentre era sul rettilineo. Il pilota monegasco è stato dunque forzato a entrare nella pit lane e ritirarsi.  

I problemi meccanici hanno colpito anche l’Alfa Romeo di Zhou e la Haas di Magnussen, entrambi team che utilizzano motori forniti dalla Ferrari. 

Al traguardo è stato un 1-2 per la Red Bull, con Verstappen davanti a Perez. Il pilota messicano si era qualificato meglio del compagno, ma durante la gara ha dovuto lasciar passare il campione in carica vista la sua velocità.

Un 1-2 estremamente pesante per quanto riguarda il mondiale, sia quello dei piloti che quello dei costruttori. Verstappen si porta ora a 150 punti, mentre Perez sale a quota 129, lasciando Leclerc in terza posizione a 116. Nei costruttori invece la Red Bull avanza a 279 punti, mentre la Ferrari rimane a 199. 

5 vittorie per la Red Bull nelle ultime 5, quattro di cui sono andate a Max Verstappen. Per quello che è, il mondiale sembra favorire il team di Milton Keynes. E quasi sicuramente quando tutte le somme saranno tirate, questo weekend a Baku rimarrà uno dei momenti, se non il momento pivotale della stagione. 

Il terzo gradino del podio è stato occupato da George Russell. Ancora una volta la consistenza del giovane bretone lo ha portato a capitalizzare sulle sfortune della Ferrari. Dietro di lui il compagno Hamilton per un ottima gara della Mercedes, e il quarto posto è valso un ‘driver of the day’ per Lewis. Nei punti anche Gasly, Vettel, le due Mclaren e le due Alpine. 

Azerbaijan: nightmare for Ferrari, sweet dreams for Red Bull

Double DNF and 0 points gained in another nightmare of a weekend for Ferrari. The first of the retirements was Sainz, who after having lost touch with the top 3 in front, had to slow down at turn 4, immediately announcing some mechanical failure on the radio. 

Leclerc on the other hand, having stopped in the tenth lap for hard tires, had inherited the first place after Red Bull’s pit stops. He then noticed white smoke coming off the back of his F1-75 and was forced to pull into the pits and retire. 

The mechanical problems also hit Alfa Romeo’s Zhou and Magnussen’s Haas, both teams who get their engines supplied by Ferrari. 

At the checkered flag it was a 1-2 for Red Bull, with Verstappen ahead of Perez. The Mexican driver out-qualified his teammate, but during the race he was told to let him get ahead given the sheer pace of the reigning world champ. 
 
A 1-2 that weighs a ton as far as the drivers and constructors championships go. Verstappen climbs to 150 points, while Perez follows at 129, leaving Leclerc at 116. In the constructors, Red Bull advances to 279 points, whereas Ferrari remain stuck at 199. 

5 victories from the last 5 for Red Bull, 4 of which were taken by Max Verstappen. For what it is, the championship seems to favor the team from Milton Keynes. And, almost certainly, when all is said and done, this weekend in Baku will remain one, if not the very pivotal moment of the season. 

Third place went to the ever-consistent George Russell, once again capitalizing on Ferrari’s misfortunes. Behind him slotted teammate Hamilton for a neat race from Mercedes, which was also worthy of driver of the day for Lewis. Points for Gasly, Vettel, the two Mclarens and the Alpines as well. 

What is perhaps the most beautiful trophy in any sport - the Infinite Trophy of the Giro d'Italia - is headed down under to Perth, Australia.

After 21 grueling stages, Bora-Hansgrohe's Jai Hindley wrested the Maglia Rosa from the back of pre-race favourite Richard Carapaz. Hindley becomes the first Australian to win the Giro.

The route of this year's Giro was one of the most grueling in recent memory. The race started with three stages in Hungary, including a time trial in Budapest that was won by another pre-race favourite, Simon Yates. The early owner of the pink jersey was Mathieu van der Poel, who came second to Yates in the time trial.

Then it was off to Italian home soil in Sicily for the first of many climbing stages, an ascent up Mount Etna, won by Hindley's Bora team mate, Lennard Kamna. Second place finisher Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek Segafredo) was seconds behind Kamna. He didn't win the day but he did take the Maglia Rosa from van der Poel.

The next two stages were ones for the sprinters and Groupama FDJ's rocket Arnaud Demare took back-to-back wins. There were no shake ups in the GC contenders, with Lopez staying in pink.

It was on Stage 9, highlighted by a massive climb up Blockhaus in Abruzzo, where things started getting interesting for the General Classification contenders. Simon Yates cracked and lost 11 minutes, pushing him well down in the standings. Hindley triumphed for the stage win, edging out attacks from Romain Bardet and Richard Carapaz.  Hindley's win would prove prophetic, placing him as a real contender for the GC crown. Lopez rallied and managed to hang on to the pink jersey, but could feel it starting to slip from his shoulders.

Stage 10 was both historic and weirdly tragic, as Biniam Girmay from Eritrea became the first black African winner of a stage in any Grand Tour. He emerged from the pack in the final sprint to edge out van der Poel at the wire. Then, during the traditional shaking of the prosecco bottle at the winner's podium, the errant cork hit Girmay in the eye, forcing him to withdraw from the Giro the next day. 

On Stage 14, featuring a hilly circuit in Turin, Simon Yates rose from the ashes of Stage 9 to claim the stage win and Richard Carapaz from Ineos-Grenadiers finally managed to steal the pink jersey from Juan Pedro Lopez. There it would stay until the penultimate day of the Giro, Stage 20.

The last road stage was the final chance for GC contenders to shake things up. The majority of the day was rather non eventful, then everything blew up in the last 4 kilometers. The top three GC contenders, Carapaz, Hindley and Mikkel Landa from Bahrain Victorious all attacked on the final ascent to Passo Fedaia. At first, they were able to hold each other's wheel, but Hindley's final attack found no answer from Carapaz or Landa. He rode away and into the pink jersey with a margin of a minute and a half. The only thing left was to hold on to that advantage in the final time trail in Verona. 

The short time trail did produce a symbolic win for Italy, as Italian time trial champion Matteo Sobrero rode a blistering race, coming up 23 seconds ahead of second place Thymen Arensman. Carapaz rode a respectable time trial, but came up well short of eliminating Hindley's advantage. The Australian held on to a 1:18 advantage, relegating Carapaz to second and Landa to third.

This Giro d'Italia was also a bitter-sweet moment for Italian cycling fans, as the Shark of Messina, Vincenzo Nibali, said before the race that this would be his last Giro. He battled hard and came in 4th in the GC standings, a very respectable 9 minutes behind Hindley, who is 11 years his junior. Nibali is one of only seven cyclists in history to win all three cycling Grand Tours - the Giro, the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana - in his career. He was legendary and pure class right to the finishing podium in Verona's Colosseum.

Quello che è probabilmente il più bel trofeo di ogni sport - Il Trofeo Infinito del Giro d’Italia - partirà per l’Australia. 

Dopo 21 estenuanti tappe, Jai Hindley, di Bora-Hansgrohe, ha rubato la maglia rosa al favorito Richard Carapaz. Hindley è il primo australiano ad aver vinto il Giro. 

Il percorso del Giro di quest’anno era uno dei più impegnativi tra quelli recenti. La gara è cominciata con tre sessioni in Ungheria, incluso una gara cronometrata vinta da un altro favorito, Simon Yates. Il primo a vestire la maglia rosa è stato Mathieu van der Poel, arrivato secondo nella cronometrata. 

Poi si è tornati in Italia, in Sicilia, per la prima tappa, scalando il monte Etna. Qui ha vinto Lennard Kamna, compagno di squadra di Hindley. Secondo Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek Segafredo) a pochi secondi da Kamna. Non ha vinto la tappa ma ha preso la maglia rosa a van der Poel. 

Le prossime due tappe erano per i velocisti, e Arnaud Demare di Groupama FDJ le ha vinte entrambe. Nessun cambiamento per la maglia rosa, che è rimasta a Lopez. 

Alla nona tappa, una difficilissima salita in Abruzzo, le cose hanno cominciato a farsi interessanti per quanto riguarda la classifica generale. Simon Yates ha perso 11 minuti, cadendo molto in basso nella classifica. Hindley ha vinto la tappa, affrontando e superando attacchi da parte di Romain Bardet e Richard Carapaz. La vittoria di Hindley si proverà profetica, in quanto lo ha reso un vero contendente per la vittoria della classifica generale. Lopez è riuscito a tenere la maglia rosa, ma il cambiamento era imminente e nell’aria. 

La decima tappa è stata storica e anche tragica, in quanto il nativo dell’Eritrea Biniam Girmay è divenuto il primo uomo di colore africano a vincere una tappa del Grand Tour. È emerso dal gruppo nello sprint finale per soffiare la vittoria a van der Poel all’arrivo. Poi, durante le celebrazioni tradizionali con lo champagne, il tappo di sughero ha colpito Girmay nell’occhio, forzandolo a ritirarsi dalla tappa del giorno seguente. 

Alla 14esima tappa, tra le colline piemontesi, Simon Yates si è reinventato dopo la nona tappa per vincere, e finalmente Richard Carapaz del team Ineos-Grenadiers ha rubato la maglia rosa da Juan Pedro Lopez. Rimarrà così fino alla 20esima e penultima tappa del Giro. 

L’ultima cronometrata era l’ultima chance per i contendenti di cambiare le cose nella classifica generale. La maggior parte della giornata è stata però poco entusiasmante, e tutto è accaduto negli ultimi 4 chilometri. I primi tre in classifica, Carapaz, Hindley e Mikkel Landa di Bahrain Victorious si sono tutti messi all’attacco all’ultima discesa al Passo Fedaia. Inizialmente, sono stati ben attaccati, ma l'attacco finale da parte di Hindley non ha ricevuto risposta da Carapaz e Landa. Si è guadagnato un vantaggio di un minuto e mezzo e la maglia rosa, ora doveva soltanto mantenere il vantaggio nell’ultima tappa a Verona. 

La corta cronometrata ha prodotto una simbolica vittoria per l’Italia, con il campione nazionale Matteo Sobrero che ha corso una gara incredibile, finendo 23 secondi prima del secondo posto Thymen Arensman. Carapaz ha corso una gara rispettabile, ma non è riuscito a eliminare il vantaggio di Hindley. L’australiano ha mantenuto un vantaggio di 1:18, relegando Carapaz al secondo posto e Landa al terzo. 

Il Giro d’Italia è stato un momento amaro per i tifosi del ciclismo italiani. Lo squalo di Messina, Vincenzo Nibali, aveva annunciato prima della gara che questo sarebbe stato il suo ultimo Giro. Ha combattuto per arrivare quarto nella classifica generale, 9 minuti dietro Hindley, più giovane dell’italiano di 11 anni. Nibali è uno di sette ciclisti che ha vinto tutti e tre i Grand Tours - il Giro, il Tour de France, e la Vuelta de Espana - durante la sua carriera. Era leggendario e ha avuto classe fino al podio finale nel Colosseo di Verona.

La notoria gara nel principato di Monaco è da sempre un momento iconico durante la stagione di Formula 1. Le velocissime monoposto devono, per un weekend, sacrificare la loro velocità per gareggiare nelle strettissime vie di Monaco, regalando spettacolo agli spettatori. 

Il weekend era cominciato nel migliore dei modi per la Ferrari. Nelle qualifiche di sabato la scuderia di Maranello aveva un netto vantaggio in velocità sulle due Red Bull, e, anche grazie all’errore di Perez all'ultimo giro di Q3, le Ferrari hanno potuto prendersi pole e secondo posto, con Leclerc davanti a Sainz. 

La posizione in cui i piloti partono è molto importante a Monaco. La natura del circuito rende difficile e quasi impossibile sorpassare se non tramite pit stops e strategie o pura fortuna con safety car e incidenti. Partendo prima e seconda quindi, le Ferrari avevano una buona chance per vincere la gara.

E invece c'è stato un grande imprevisto domenica: la pioggia. Proprio quando i piloti si sono disposti nelle loro posizioni sulla griglia di partenza una pioggia torrenziale ha cominciato ad abbattersi sul circuito, posticipando l’inizio della gara e aggiungendo un imprevedibile dinamica a una gara che poteva essere “facile” per la Ferrari. 

L’uomo in pole e eroe locale, nato e cresciuto proprio in queste strade, avrebbe sentito la pressione più di chiunque altro. Leclerc non ha mai infatti terminato un gara a Monaco da quando gareggia in Formula 1, e sapendo di dover correre sul bagnato avrebbe sicuramente messo dubbi nella testa del pilota Monegasco. 

Con quasi un’ora di ritardo la gara è finalmente cominciata, e subito Leclerc e Sainz hanno iniziato a rilassare i muscoli davanti. Tutto procedeva come previsto, finché un terribile errore da parte del team Ferrari ha condannato la gara di Charles, e ha “regalato” la vittoria a Perez, anche se il Messicano ha guidato in modo impeccabile tutto il weekend.  

L’errore è stato quello di chiamare entrambi Sainz e Leclerc ai box uno dopo l’altro allo stesso giro. Il primo a entrare, Sainz, era rimasto davanti al compagno di squadra avendo esteso il primo stint, mentre Leclerc era già venuto ai box una volta per cambiare le gomme. 

Dopo aver realizzato l’errore, il pitwall Ferrari ha provato a dire a Charles di rimanere fuori, ma il Monegasco, già entrato nella pit lane, ha mostrato tutta la sua frustrazione tramite un messaggio radio. Stazionario per 4 secondi mentre Sainz veniva servito dai meccanici, Leclerc ha perso posizione anche su Verstappen. Alla fine Leclerc ha finito in quarta posizione. 

Oltre a questo errore, una grande sfortuna ha, probabilmente, negato a Carlos la prima vittoria della sua carriera dopo che è rimasto bloccato dietro a un doppiato nel suo primo giro sulle gomme nuove, agevolando il pit stop di Perez e facendo sì che il Messicano potesse prendersi il primo posto al giro seguente. 

I complimenti sono da fare però alla Red Bull. Un’ottima performance da parte dei piloti e anche del team, che ha decisamente fatto tutte le decisioni corrette, massimizzando un weekend cominciato in modo difficile dopo che le Ferrari avevano dominato le qualifiche. 

Da notare anche le buone prestazioni personali da parte di Russell e Perez. Il giovane della Mercedes continua a mostrare incredibile consistenza, essendo l’unico pilota quest’anno ad aver terminato ogni gara in quinto posto o meglio. 

Perez invece si guadagna la terza vittoria in carriera e si porta a soli sei punti da Leclerc in terzo posto, riaprendo una possibile sfida a tre per il mondiale. 

Monaco: Perez wins and gets emotional. Ferrari slips again

The notorious race in Monaco has always been one of the most iconic moments in the Formula 1 season. The blistering fast one seaters sacrifice their top speed to race through the narrow streets of the Principality in a spectacle of close control racing. 

The weekend had begun in the best possible way for Ferrari. In the qualifying session Ferrari showed a net advantage in pace over Red Bull, and, thanks to Perez’s error in the last run of Q3, Ferrari secured a front low lockout with Leclerc on pole and Sainz just behind. 

The starting position for the drivers is crucial in Monaco. The nature of the track makes overtaking so difficult while racing, and it’s much more likely that a good strategy or pure luck might help drivers gain or lose positions. Starting first and second then, Ferrari were highly likely to win this race.  

But, there was one great variable on Sunday. Just as the drivers took their spot on the grid, torrential rain started falling on the track, postponing the start of the race and adding an unpredictable dynamic to the outcome of a race that should’ve been “easy” for Ferrari. 

The man on Pole, local hero, born and raised through the streets of the Principality would’ve felt the most pressure out of anyone on the grid at the time. Leclerc has never actually finished a race in his home Grand Prix, and knowing that he would be racing in the rain could’ve put doubts in the Monegasque driver’s head. 

Nearly an hour after the original time, the race finally got underway, and immediately Leclerc and Sainz relaxed upfront and started pulling a gap. All was going well until a terrible mistake from the team cost Leclerc’s lead and compromised his race, while handing the win over to Perez, who drove well all weekend long. 

The mistake was that of calling both Sainz and Leclerc in the pits at the same time. Sainz remained ahead after extending his first stint, while Charles had already come in once to change his tires. 

After having realized the mistake, the pitwall tried to tell Charles to stay out on track, and the Monagasque, already in the pit lane, expressed all his frustration through the radio. Stationary for 4 seconds while Sainz was serviced, Leclerc lost his track position to Verstappen. In the end, he finished fourth. 

Along with this mistake, an unfortunate turn of events probably cost Carlos Sainz his first ever win, as he was stuck behind a backmarker in his out lap, and this allowed Perez to pit and avoid the undercut from Ferrari. 

All praise goes out to Red Bull. A neat and tidy performance by the drivers and the team, who definitely nailed all of their decisions, maximizing and probably exceeding the expectations for a weekend that had started out as very difficult for them. 

It’s also worth mentioning the great personal displays by Russell and Perez. The young Mercedes driver continues to show his consistency by being the only driver on the grid to have finished every race in the top 5 this season. 

Perez on the other hand wins his third career race and narrows the gap to Leclerc to only six points, paving the way for a potential three horse race for the Championship. 

14 Champions League vinte, il doppio del Milan al secondo posto, 5 vinte solamente negli ultimi dieci anni. Il Real Madrid è ancora una volta campione d’Europa, avendo sconfitto i campioni di Francia del PSG, i campioni in carica del Chelsea, i campioni d’Inghilterra del Manchester City e poi il Liverpool in finale. 

Un solo gol di Vinicius Jr. regala il trofeo ad Ancelotti, il quarto come allenatore per Re Carlo, mai nessuno come lui. Una grande sfida con un Liverpool decisamente all’altezza e che ha avuto diverse chance per segnare, ma la super prestazione di Courtois ha tenuto vive le speranze dei Blancos fino al gol del loro talento brasiliano. 

Un fantastico bonus in una stagione che aveva visto il Real trionfare confortevolmente nella Liga, e diverse volte rimontare in Champions quando tutto sembrava perduto, merito di una gran forza di volontà e individualismi nei ranghi dei Galacticos. 

Parlando di individuali, il bomber Benzema mette praticamente una mano sul pallone d’oro per il 2022. Il franco-algerino ha avuto un incredibile stagione ed ha trascinato il suo Real, di cui è capitano, con 44 gol e 15 assist, numeri da stella del calcio mondiale. 

Champions League: Real are champions again, King Carlo goes down in history

14 Champions League triumphs, double those of Milan in second place, 5 won just in the last ten years. Real Madrid are champions of Europe yet again, having defeated the champions of France of PSG, reigning champions of Chelsea, England’s champions of Manchester City, and Liverpool in the final. 

A sole goal from Vinicius Jr. won Ancelotti the trophy, his fourth as a manager, no one has ever done it before. A great match with Liverpool who were certainly up for the challenge having gone close to scoring so many times in the match. Madrid’s hopes were kept alive by a brilliant display by Courtois, man of the match. 

A fantastic bonus to an already successful season in which Real comfortably won La Liga, and even when it all seemed lost in the Champions League, they were able to come back through sheer willpower and great individuals among their ranks. 

Speaking of individuals, Benzema has practically put a hand on the 2022 Ballon d’Or. The Frenchman has had an amazing season being a leader at Real, scoring 44 goals and assisting another 15, numbers that are worth the best player in the world award. 

Qualità, grandi battaglie, emozioni e colpi di scena sono stati gli ingredienti di questo campionato di Serie A, concluso domenica con la 38esima e ultima giornata di partite. 

La sfida per lo Scudetto si è prolungata fino a domenica in quanto tra Milan e Inter c’erano solamente due punti di differenza. Il Milan, impegnato a Reggio Emilia contro il Sassuolo, ha dominato vincendo 3-0, tre assist di Rafa Leao, doppietta di Giroud e gol di Kessie, e vincendo il campionato. 

La vittoria dei cugini milanisti significa amaro per l’Inter, che avendo creduto fino all’ultimo è rimasta a bocca asciutta. Mentre il Milan giocava a Reggio Emilia infatti, gli uomini di Inzaghi hanno ospitato la Sampdoria, ormai salva, a San Siro, e il 3-0 rifilato agli uomini di Giampaolo rimane l’unico piccolo tocco di dolce in un’amarissima domenica calcistica per i nerazzurri.

Una volta terminate le partite, i tifosi milanisti hanno invaso Piazza Duomo con bandiere, stendardi e fuochi d’artificio, ed hanno festeggiato nella notte in cui Milano, e l’Italia intera si è colorato definitivamente di Rossonero. 

Ugualmente avvincente alla sfida per lo Scudetto è stata la lotta per la salvezza. Dopo che il Venezia è stato matematicamente condannato alla 36esima giornata, due tra Salernitana, Cagliari e Genoa avrebbero fatto compagnia ai veneziani. 

Dopo una brutta sconfitta con il Napoli alla penultima giornata, il Genoa si è dovuto arrendere ed accettare il proprio fato: la Serie B. Dunque la sfida finale per l’ultimo posto valido per rimanere in Serie A era tra Cagliari e Salernitana, quest’ultimi reduci da 5 risultati positivi e “favoriti”. 

Eppure, la Salernitana è stata travolta dall’Udinese, perdendo 4-0, ma grazie al pareggio tra Cagliari e Venezia, i sardi hanno perso l’ultima occasione per rimanere in Serie A.

L’ultima cosa da decidere, all’ultima giornata, era quali due delle tra Fiorentina, Roma e Atalanta sarebbero andate in Europa. Con Fiorentina e Atalanta a quota 59 punti, e Roma prima di loro a 60, tutto avrebbe potuto cambiare, in quanto la Fiorentina era impegnata in una sfida durissima con la Juventus, mentre la Roma era a Torino contro il Torino e l’Atalanta ha ospitato l’Empoli. 

A Torino la Roma ha vinto 3-0, qualificandosi per l’Europa League e levandosi un grosso peso dal peso in vista della finale di Conference League. La Fiorentina ha invece battuto la Juventus a Firenze per 2-0, sigillando il loro posto in Conference League e chiudendo una difficile stagione per gli uomini di Allegri. L’Atalanta è rimasta fuori da tutto dopo aver perso contro l'Empoli per 1-0 a Bergamo. Una sconfitta simbolo della pessima continuità da parte della squadra di Gasperini questa stagione, particolarmente nelle partite in casa. 

Inoltre, i premi per il miglior portiere, difensore, centrocampista, attaccante, giovane e MVP della stagione sono stati assegnati all’ultima giornata. Rispettivamente, i premi sono stati vinti da Maignan del Milan, Bremer del Torino, Brozovic dell’Inter, Immobile della Lazio, Osimhen del Napoli e Leao del Milan. Tutti decisamente azzeccati. 

The Scudetto is back in Rossonero! Milan win their first league title in 11 years

Quality, great battles, emotions, and twists have been the ingredients for this year’s Serie A, which ended on Sunday with matchday 38. 

The fight for the Scudetto lasted until the very last matchday, given that Milan and Inter were only two points apart. Milan, busy at Reggio Emilia against Sassuolo, bagged three goals in the first half to win them the game and the League. Three assists from Rafa Leao, two goals from Giroud and one from Kessie. 

The victory from the city rivals means agony for Inter, who having believed until the end fell just short of the title. While Milan was at Sassuolo, Inter hosted Sampdoria, already safe, at San Siro, and the 3-0 win by Inzaghi’s men was made useless by Milan’s win, and makes it the only tiny, sweet moment in an otherwise bitter Sunday. 

Once the games ended, the Milan supporters flooded Piazza Duomo and began the celebrations that lasted long into the night, while the sky over Milano and the whole of Italy coloured itself in red and black. 

Equally exciting as the Scudetto battle was the relegation battle. After Venezia was mathematically relegated in matchday 36, it left two more spots to be filled by Salernitana, Cagliari, and Genoa. 
 
After a bad loss to Napoli in the penultimate matchday, Genoa had to accept defeat and accept Serie B football for next year. This left the battle to stay up in the top flight between Cagliari and Salernitana, the ladder coming off of a good string of results. 

However, Salernitana were demolished 4-0 by Udinese, but thanks to a tie between Cagliari and Venezia, the Sardinians sealed their fate, and Nicola’s men clinched safety.

The last thing to be decided on matchday 38 was which two of Fiorentina, Roma, and Atalanta were going to play European football next year. With both Fiorentina and Atalanta level at 59 points, and Roma just ahead at 60, anything could have changed. Fiorentina was busy with Juventus, while Roma traveled to Turin to play Torino and Atalanta hosted Empoli. 

Roma got the job done by winning 3-0 and qualifying for the Europa League ahead of their Conference League final. Fiorentina, against all odds, walked over Juventus and won 2-0, securing Conference League football and ending off a difficult season for Allegri’s men. Atalanta missed out on everything after losing 1-0 to Empoli at home, a result symbol of the struggles in consistency that have hit Gasperini’s squad this season. 

The awards for best keeper, defender, midfielder, striker, young player, and MVP were also given out during this last matchday. Respectively, they were won by Maignan of Milan, Bremer of Torino, Brozovic of Inter, Immobile of Lazio, Osimhen of Napoli, and Leao of Milan. No controversy over these decisions. 

Pep Guardiola e Diego “Cholo” Simeone sono due allenatori che hanno visioni completamente opposte del calcio. Da una parte Guardiola ha fatto di sé l'allenatore per eccellenza quando si parla di possesso palla e “bel” gioco, mentre Simeone è l’opposto, poco possesso e tanto catenaccio per evitare di subire gol. 

I due opposti si sono scontrati negli ottavi di finale, e hanno giocato esattamente come tutti si aspettavano, il City praticamente sempre con la palla, e l’Atletico seduto in un blocco difensivo per sventare gli attacchi dei Citizens. 

C’è voluto un momento di brillantezza dal pupillo di Guardiola Phil Foden per scalfire la corazza dei Colchoneros, ma grazie al suo passaggio filtrante calcolato sotto le gambe di Lodi con intorno quattro maglie biancorosse De Bruyne si è trovato davanti alla porta, libero di trovare l’angolino e il gol vincente. 1-0 e vantaggio City. 

A Lisbona  invece c'è stato davvero troppo Liverpool. Una buona prestazione da parte del Benfica ma nulla da fare contro i Reds. Konate e Mane hanno portato i Reds in vantaggio per due a zero prima del momentaneo accorciamento da parte di Nunez. All’ultimo un Benfica scoperto si fa infilare da Luis Diaz che riporta a due i gol di scarto del Liverpool, un vantaggio clamoroso che i Reds si riportano ad Anfield. 

Poi mercoledì sera sono scesi in campo Chelsea e Real sotto la pioggia di Londra. Come la pioggia era torrenziale, anche la performance di Karim Benzema lo è stata, col francese il rete tre volte fuori casa per affondare il Chelsea con un 3-1 importantissimo. 

Due di testa e uno di fortuna, ma Benzema sembra essere un uomo posseduto quando la palla gira dalle sue parti. Thiago Silva non ha saputo dove girarsi a guardare che già Benzema andava a celebrare coi tifosi. Seconda tripletta di fila dopo quella al Psg, speriamo che Karim non ci faccia l’abitudine. 

Nel finale il Chelsea ha sprecato due buone chance con Ziyech al volo e Lukaku di testa, ma anche col gol di Havertz il danno fatto dai Galacticos è quasi irreparabile. 

E poi ecco la vittoria inaspettata e incredibile del Villareal ai danni del Bayern Monaco. Un 1-0 firmato Danjuma che poteva essere due se il gol di Coquelin non fosse stato annullato, ma comunque un impresa degli spagnoli di aver battuto i colossi tedeschi favoriti per la vittoria del torneo. 

Il Bayern si mangerà le mani per aver perso così, quando delle chance sono andate sprecate, come quella di Muller ai piedi della porta. Nulla però dice che i bavaresi non si alzeranno al ritorno, vedi i sedicesimi, ma nulla toglie a questa grande prestazione del Villareal. 

Guardiola beats Simeone, too much Liverpool for Benfica, Benzema gets the hat trick, and Villareal shunt Bayern: Here’s the stories from the first leg of the quarter finals

Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone are two coaches that have completely different styles of football. On one side Guardiola has made himself the coach by excellence when it comes to ball possession and clean playing, while Simeone is the opposite, scruffy, gritty, and very defensively oriented to avoid conceding. 

The two opposites would face off in the quarter finals, and they did play exactly as people expected them too. City practically held the ball the whole game, while Atletico sat deep in a block and defended City’s waves of attacks. 

It took a proper moment of brilliance from Phil Foden to put a dent in the Colchoneros’ armor, but thanks to his through ball that went between Lodi’s legs, all while being surrounded by four players, De Bruyne was left one on one with Oblak and could pick his spot to give City a huge lead to take back home. 

In Lisbon there was too much of Liverpool to handle. A good performance from the hosts Benfica but nothing they could do against the Reds. Konate and Mane gave Liverpool a 2-0 lead before the half, until Nunez pulled one back in the second half, only to have the lead restored by Luis Diaz in the end. A huge advantage that Liverpool will take to Anfield. 

Wednesday night Chelsea and Real Madrid squared off under the rain in London. And as the rain was torrential, so too was Benzema’s performance, with the Frenchman bagging himself a hat trick to sink Chelsea by three goals to one. 

Two brilliant headers and a lucky goal, but Benzema seems to be a man possessed when the ball comes his way. Thiago Silva knew nothing about him and while he was looking to see where he was, Karim was already off celebrating with the crowd. A second consecutive hat trick in the Champions League after the one against Psg, let’s hope he doesn’t make this a habit. 

In the end Chelsea had some good chances with Ziyech’s volley and Luakau’s header, but even with Havertz’s goal the damage done by the Galacticos seems irreparable. 

And last  but by all means not least, an incredible and unexpected victory by Villareal against Bayern Munich. A 1-0 courtesy of Danjuma that could’ve been two if Coquelin’s goal wasn’t disallowed. But nonetheless an incredible feat from the Spaniards to beat the favorites from Germany. 

Bayern will chew their hands away to have lost like this, when so many chances went begging, such as the one that fell kindly to Thomas Muller’s feet in front of the goal. Nothing says that the Bavarians won’t rise to the occasion in the second leg, see the round of 16, but this is still an amazing win for Villareal. 

Pole position, vittoria, primo in ogni giro e giro veloce, questi i numeri di Leclerc in Australia in un weekend perfetto per il pilota monegasco. 

Il primo passo verso il primo Grand Chelem personale per Charles è stato sabato, quando ha messo la Ferrari in pole con tre decimi di vantaggio su Verstappen, che però si è lamentato di non sentirsi a suo agio con la Redbull. 

Sainz invece non è riuscito a far meglio di un nono posto nelle qualifiche per colpa di un errore nell’ultimo giro veloce del Q3, dopo che il suo primo giro è stato eliminato per una bandiera rossa dopo l’incidente di Alonso. 

Nella gara Leclerc sapeva che sarebbe stato da solo contro le due Redbull in secondo e terzo posto, ma grazie a una macchina “bestiale”, gli attacchi di Verstappen sono durati molto poco, praticamente solo sulle ripartenze dopo la safety car. 

Sainz ha avuto problemi con il volante prima dell'inizio della gara. Il volante nuovo ha però beffato lo spagnolo alla partenza quando l’anti-stall è partito per sbaglio, e Sainz è sceso fino alla 14esima posizione. 

Da qui, la foga di riprendere in mano la propria gara ha portato Sainz a commettere un gravissimo errore mentre stava cercando di superare una Haas nel secondo settore, proprio dove aveva sbagliato il giorno prima, uscendo di pista e fermandosi nella ghiaia. 

Un ritiro amaro per Carlos, ma Binotto ha confermato che il pilota saprà riprendersi, mostrando la sua fiducia verso Sainz. 

Un ritiro brutto anche quello di Verstappen, che verso la fine della gara ha sentito uno strano odore provenire dal suo motore, fermandosi immediatamente per un presunto problema con la miscela di carburante. 

Verstappen ha corso in seconda posizione per tutta la gara senza però trovare la velocità per prendere Leclerc, che ha confortevolmente aperto un gap di quasi 8 secondi nel primo stint. Verstappen ha detto ai microfoni di non essersi sentito bene con la macchina, e che cercando di spingere troppo le gomme si stavano degradando, inutile quindi provare a tenere testa a Leclerc. 

Alla fine Leclerc ha anche domandato al pit wall se avesse potuto provare il giro veloce negli ultimi giri. E anche se dalla radio gli è stato detto che non sarebbe stato necessario, Leclerc ha fatto di testa sua, mostrando ancora una volta il dominio delle Ferrari e la propria abilità di mantenere le gomme vive fino alla fine. 

Grand Slam for Leclerc, Ferrari was “a beast” in Australia

Pole, victory, led every lap, and got the fastest laps, these are the stats Leclerc pulled off in Australia in a perfect weekend for him. 

The first step towards his Grand Slam was Pole on saturday, when he put his Ferrari on the front row with a masterful lap, three tenths quicker than Verstappen, who complained that he didn’t feel comfortable with his Redbull. 

Sainz wasn’t able to do better than ninth in qualifying due to a bad mistake on his last flying lap in Q3, after his original flier was deleted due to the red flag being pulled after Alonso’s crash. 

In the race, Leclerc knew that he would be alone against the two Redbulls in second and third place, but thanks to “a beast” of a car, the attacks from Verstappen lasted shortly and only happened after the safety car restart. 

Sainz had some issues with his steering wheel ahead of the race start. The new steering wheel also caused problems to the Spaniard when an anti-stall kicked in at the race start, dropping him to 14th. 

Eager to get his race back on track, Sainz made a costly mistake as he was trying to pass a Haas in the second sector, where he made a mistake in qualifying, spinning and beaching himself in the gravel pits. 

A bitter retirement for Carlos, but Binotto confirmed that he will comeback, showing his trust in Sainz. 

An equally bitter retirement was that of Verstappen, who near the end of the race smelt something weird in his engine and immediately pulled over with what is presumed to be a fuel problem. 

Verstappen ran in second place for the whole race, unable to find the pace to challenge Leclerc ahead, who comfortably opened a gap of about 8 seconds in the first stint. Verstappen told the press that he didn’t feel good with the car, and that while pushing his tires degraded way too quickly, making it useless to try and chase Leclerc. 

In the end, Leclerc also asked his pit wall if he could go for the fastest lap. The wall told him it wasn’t necessary because he already had it, but Charles still continued to set fastest lap after fastest lap until the very end of the race, showing Ferrari’s domination and his ability to manage tires effectively. 

Il Derby d’Italia non è mai una partita banale. Una rivalità storica tra due squadre che hanno vinto tutto nel loro tempo, e che da sempre sono ai vertici del calcio italiano, lottando per scudetto e coppa italia ogni stagione. 

Ma uno Juve-Inter così importante non si vedeva da un pezzo. Quarta e terza in classifica rispettivamente, critici e giornalisti hanno battezzato il perdente di questa partita come escluso dalla corsa per lo scudetto con Milan e Napoli. Inoltre, una possibile sconfitta della Juve avrebbe fatto comodo alla Roma, solo 5 punti dietro ai bianconeri. 

La partita è stata una battaglia più che altro. Falli, cartellini, intensità alle stelle per tutti i 90 (e passa), minuti di gioco, ma anche tanta qualità, agonismo, e, come sempre, controversia. 
Neanche un minuto passato dal fischio d’inizio che già Lautaro si prende un giallo per una gamba tesa che apre la fronte a Locatelli, per farci intendere. 

Nel primo tempo la Juve ha preso in mano il gioco creando più dell’Inter e lasciando nell’aria un odore di gol imminente. Eppure, nel finale del primo tempo, è stata l’Inter a sbloccare la partita grazie a un rigore di Calhanoglu, guadagnato da Dumfries in una delle poche azioni pericolose degli interisti nel primo tempo. 

Dagli undici metri Calha si è fatto beffare da Szczesny la prima volta, con poi un curioso rimpallo tra tre giocatori juventini che ha comunque portato la palla in rete, seguito da un coro di proteste per un presunto fallo anche se in realtà hanno fatto tutto da soli. 

In ogni caso, il rigore si sarebbe dovuto ritirare, da regolamento, dato che al momento della conclusione De Ligt era già nell’area. Al secondo tentativo Calhanoglu ha tirato forte e angolato lasciando zero chance a Szczesny, e immaginiamo quanto quel pallone potesse pesare tra i piedi del turco.

Nella ripresa l’Inter ha imposto la fase difensiva in modo quasi perfetto. Gli unici due momenti che hanno fatto tremare il muro nerazzurro sono stati il palo di Zackaria dopo uno slalom da paura, e un tiro di Vlahovic che ha accarezzato il palo, dopo che il serbo ha lasciato Skriniar nella polvere in stile Giroud contro de Vrij. 

Qualche episodio dubbio ha reso l’arbitro e la sala VAR protagonisti in questa sfida importantissima. Un fallo di Bastoni su Zakaria appena fuori area, una trattenuta su Vlahovic, e nel finale un (lieve) tocco sulla faccia di De Ligt, in area, da parte di Darmian. Forse la Juve avrebbe avuto più successo se avesse cercato di fare gol su azione invece che cercare disperatamente il rigore. 

Come ha detto lo stesso Skriniar dopo il match: adesso conta fare punti più che giocare bene, e con una vittoria combattuta e fangosa l’Inter dimostra che con questa mentalità potrebbe ancora rilanciarsi nella corsa per lo scudetto, soprattutto ora che la partita col Bologna da recuperare sarà recuperata il 27 aprile. 

Prima di Inter e Juve, sono scese in campo anche Atalanta e Napoli in un big match pomeridiano importante per la corsa scudetto. Gli uomini del “saggio” Spalletti hanno vinto per 3-1 a Bergamo con gol di Insigne su rigore, Politano, e nel finale Elmas, anche se l’Atalanta aveva riaperto i giochi sul 2-0 con un colpo di testa di De Roon. 

Una vittoria cruciale per il Napoli che si porta a -1 punto dal Milan capolista, reduce però da una bruttissima prestazione in casa contro il Bologna, strappando solamente un pareggio da una partita in cui era favoritissima. 

Un Milan poco acceso e disorganizzato a centrocampo e in attacco. Bene la difesa che però ha poco da fare se non fermare le ripartenze del Bologna sui palloni sanguinosi persi dal proprio centrocampo. Il Milan ha dominato il possesso ma non ha trovato l’intesa tra i reparti, e molte giocate che avevano tanto potenziale sono state sprecate per mancanza di precisione. 

Ovviamente però il Milan ha avuto delle buone chance per segnare. Due volte Leao è stato bloccato da Skorupski, migliore in campo, che salva anche il tiro di Bennacer e nel finale un colpo di testa di Rebic sotto la traversa. 

Uno 0-0 che riporta in vita Inter e sopratutto Napoli, che si trovano ora rispettivamente a -4 con una partita da recuperare proprio contro il Bologna, e -1 dal Milan. Nulla è ancora deciso. Settimana prossima le tre in lotta per lo scudetto avranno sfide simili. Il Milan andrà a Torino per vedersela col Torino in un campo difficile, il Napoli ospiterà la Fiorentina in un match complicato e l’Inter ospiterà a sua volta l’Hellas Verona. Da ora in poi nessuno si può permettere passi falsi. 

Derby d’Italia, title race, and the latest news from Serie A: Matchday 31

The Derby d’Italia is never a dull game. A historic rivalry between two teams that have won it all in their time, and that are consistently at the vertex of italian soccer, fighting for the league title and the Italian Cup. 

But it had been a long time since a match between Juventus and Inter was this important. The two teams, fourth and third respectively, were playing to keep their title challenge alive in a do or die match. And a possible defeat could’ve meant pressure from below by Roma, who is only 5 points shy of Juve. 
 

The game was more like a battle. Fouls, cards, intensity of the highest levels for all of the 90 and some minutes of playing time. But also much quality, competition, and as usual, controversy. Not even a minute had gone by since the start of the game that Lautaro high footed Locatelli and opened a wound on his forehead, just to make the point clearer. 

In the first half Juve took the game by the bridles, creating more than Inter and putting the smell of a goal in the air. Despite this, in the dying minutes of the first half it was Inter who broke the deadlock thanks to a penalty kick from Calhanoglu, awarded after a foul by Morata on Dumfries. 

From 12 yards Calha was frozen by Szcenzy the first time, with a follow up of a curious series of rebounds clattering into three Juventus players attempting to clear the ball but the ball ending up in the net nonetheless. Juventus claimed for a foul but they had done it all by themselves. 

Either way, the penalty was to be retaken because De Ligt was already in the box by the time Calhanoglu shot, as the rulebook says. This time the Turk shot hard and low to the right of Szcenzny leaving him no chance, and we imagine just how heavy that ball must’ve felt between his feet. 

In the second half Inter imposed a good defensive block. The only two moments that troubled the Inter wall were a lovely run from Zakaria culminating with a shot off the post and a Vlahovic occasion after the Serbian had left Skriniar on the spot in a “Giroud versus De Vrij” fashion, but his shot was just wide.

There were also some doubtful episodes that made the referee and the VAR crew protagonists of this super important match. A foul by Bastoni on Zakaria just outside the box, presumably a tug on Vlahovic, and in the end, a (light) touch on De Ligt’s face by Darmian in the box. Maybe if Juventus had played to score instead of trying to get a penalty they would’ve done a lot better. 

Like Skriniar said after the match: it’s more important to get results than play well now, and with a scruffy and hard fought win Inter demonstrate this mentality could play them right back into the title race, especially now that we know their match against Bologna will be rescheduled for April 27th. 

Before Inter and Juventus, Atalanta and Napoli took the field in a mid-afternoon big match important for the title race. Spalletti’s men won 3-1 away at Bergamo with goals by Insigne from the spot, Politano, and in the end Elmas, to cancel the momentary 2-1 by De Roon’s header that kept Atalanta in the match. 

A crucial victory for Napoli who now only fall short of Milan by 1 point, as the Rossoneri tied Bologna at home in a poor display in a game where they were net favorites. 

A Milan side not inspired and disorganized in midfield and attack. Defending was done well although there wasn’t much to do besides stopping the occasional counter from Bologna on the loose balls lost in the midfield. Milan dominated possession but couldn’t find a link up between the lines, and many plays with great potential ended up getting wasted because of a lack of precision. 

Obviously Milan had a lot of chances to score as well. Twice Leao was denied by Skorupski, best player on the pitch, who also saved Bennacer’s shot and in the end a great header from Rebic just under the bar. 

A 0-0 tie that gives life to Inter and Napoli, who find themselves at -4 with a game in hand and -1 to Milan respectively. Nothing is decided just yet. Next week the top three will face off against similar opponents and will have similar tasks. Milan will travel to Turin to take on Torino on a hard field, while Napoli will host in-form Fiorentina and Inter will host Hellas Verona. From here on out no one can afford any slips.

Lo storico San Siro o Meazza è uno degli stadi più iconici del calcio mondiale. Stadio che da tempo ospita le due squadre di Milano: Inter e Milan, e che ha preso il celebre soprannome de “La Scala del Calcio”. Eppure, da tempo si parla di un nuovo stadio per la città di Milano, ispirato al Duomo, simbolo della città. Il progetto ha però incontrato difficoltà burocratiche che hanno rallentato i tempi, praticamente fermando il progresso.

Il nuovo progetto per costruire uno stadio vicino a quello vecchio non è inizialmente andato a porto data la bocciatura del Sindaco di Milano Sala, che vorrebbe mantenere San Siro come stadio principale almeno fino alla cerimonia d’inaugurazione dei giochi olimpici invernali di Cortina nel 2026, come riportato dalla Gazzetta dello Sport. 

“La Cattedrale” è come è stato battezzato il nuovo stadio di Milano. Un progetto futuristico con pannelli solari intorno allo scheletro dello stadio e diverse infrastrutture nelle vicinanze per creare un parco di circa 50mila metri quadrati. Il nuovo stadio avrà una capienza ridotta rispetto al Meazza. Da 80 mila si scende a 65 mila, ma l’architettura e le sale interne de “La Cattedrale” saranno nettamente più moderne. 

Il nuovo stadio sarebbe dovuto sorgere nelle vicinanze di San Siro, per mantenere la storia della città vicino al futuro, ma viste le difficoltà Inter e Milan hanno deciso che potrebbero anche guardare altrove. Si pensa a Sesto San Giovanni, con le squadre già in contatto con il Sindaco, ma questa soluzione non sarebbe ideale in quanto lascerebbe lo stadio fuori da Milano e San Siro vuoto e dimenticato. 

Ma perché tutta questa foga di avere uno stadio nuovo? Negli ultimi anni il calcio è diventato sempre più lussuoso, e, anche se non piace dirlo, i soldi sono la cosa più importante per le squadre. Elliot e Zhang, rispettivi proprietari di Milan e Inter, vorrebbero ricavare di più dal loro stadio, cosa che potranno fare solo essendone i padroni. San Siro rimane proprietà della città di Milano, dunque le squadre pagano l’affitto per utilizzarlo e non possono massimizzare i ricavi come fanno diverse squadre in Europa, e dato che le milanesi vogliono tornare a essere competitive in Europa, avere un proprio stadio pare mandatorio, in quanto questa è la strategia più effettiva, come dimostrato dagli altri top club. 

Milano: The project for the new stadium, here is “La Cattedrale”

The historic San Siro or Meazza is one of the most iconic stadiums worldwide. A stadium that has for long hosted the two teams of Milano: Inter and Milan, and that has gained the nickname of “La Scala del Calcio”, in homage to the famous theater of Milano. Despite this, there have been talks of a new stadium for the city, inspired by the Duomo, symbol of the Milano. The project however has encountered bureaucratic difficulties which have slowed its project to a halt. 

The new project to build a stadium near the old one was initially stopped by environmentalists and the Mayor of Milano Sala, who thinks San Siro should remain the main stadium until at least the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina, as reported by the Gazzetta dello Sport. 

“La Cattedrale”, cathedral in English, is how the new stadium has been named. A futuristic project with solar panels around the skeleton of the stadium with various infrastructures in the surrounding for a park of about 50k square meters. The new stadium will have a reduced capacity in respect to the Meazza. From 80k it will be down to 65k, but the architecture and internal features will be far more modern. 

The new stadium should’ve initially been built near San Siro, to maintain past and future close to each other, but seeing the difficulties, Inter and Milan have decided they may look elsewhere for their new home. They have been thinking about Sesto San Giovanni, and the teams have reported contacts with the Mayor, but this solution would not be ideal as it would leave the new stadium out of the city and San Siro empty and forgotten. 

Why this rush to build a new stadium? In the last decade football has become ever more luxurious, and even though it sucks to say, money has become the most important thing for the teams. Elliot and Zhang, the respective owners of Milan and Inter, would like to profit more from the stadium, which they will only be able to do if they are the owners. Given that San Siro remains property of the city of Milano, and that Inter and Milan rent the stadium to play, it’s evident that profit cannot be maximized. This has proven to be the recipe for success for other big clubs in Europe, and since both Inter and Milan wish to become competitive again in the continental scene, it makes sense for them to have a stadium all of their own.
