The Kelowna Canadian Italian Club is proud to name our communication publication THE GRAPEVINE once again.
The very first Grapevine newsletter was produced and mailed to members via Canada Post on March 1, 1975. The cost of a Canadian stamp was .06! Past President Giuseppe (Joe) Iafrancesco and his wife Bianca have collected and preserved many of the original newsletters since the start. We thank Mrs. Iafrancesco who has generously allowed us access to these copies to share with our members. These documents are a priceless treasure of our club’s history, made available for us to enjoy. We will continue to share the past 47 years of “The Grapevine” with you through our social media and on our new webpage “The Grapevine.” We would like to acknowledge Clara Poitras, Bianca (Russo) Iafrancesco, Erza Rampone, Lina (Russo) Cuglietta and Pina Scinicariello for editing the very first Grapevine on March 1, 1975.

Fare una passeggiata: to take a short walk purely for pleasure. An Italian way to spend the early evening or anytime to get outside to reconnect with family, neighbours and friends. Walking and hiking gives me enormous pleasure, momentum and enables me to step outside the everyday routine. It is a cost effective and green activity. Spending time outdoors teaches one to respect the earth and nature. We are privileged and fortunate to live in such an abundant and diverse ecosystem in Kelowna and Canada. In Italy, la passeggiata tradition is an evening ritual of a gentle and slow stroll through the main streets of the city or town, usually in the pedestrian zones. Strollers work their way to the centro storico (historic centre) or if nearby il lungomare (by the sea). You can see people of all generations walking or sitting on a bench along the route. Maybe some friends have made plans to walk and then have a drink or apperativo together to catch up on the day’s events. People of all ages take part in the socialization of la passeggiata. Young children, babies, senior members in the community and pets. Everybody takes it in and all see each other. There are many health benefits to organizing una passegiatta with a friend, family members or even to stroll on your own. The aim is to get outside daily, enjoy the fresh air and take notice of what is going on in your neighbourhood or local park. The goal of walking and or hiking are to keep your mind and body moving especially when you feel challenged or may not be up for partaking in any activity. At this point in my life, I focus on taking good care of myself, staying healthy and appreciating my overall mobility. I have learned that you have to prepare yourself mentally and physically to get into the daily routine of walking or hiking. It takes a determined mind set, commitment, planning, go-power and mostly motivation. As the saying goes, “if it is to be, then it is up to me”. Spring is almost here, I can feel it. I encourage you to connect with a friend, neighbour or family members to plan and celebrate la tua passegiatta together. Walking for 30 - 60 minutes or more each day at a moderate pace can help you: • Feel good. • Increase your fitness, strengthen your bones, muscles and joints. • Have more energy and release stress. • Breath fresh air and increase lung capacity • Feel more relaxed. • Sleep better. What’s romantic, dynamic and culturally important? The Italian language! To speak Italian brings a lifetime of opportunities to investigate Italy’s culture, landscape and history. You can explore Italy's past and present with interest and enthusiasm. I moved to British Columbia 14 years ago and experienced a wonderful opportunity to revitalize my second language of Italian by belonging to a vivacious informal Italian speaking group. We reconvened in Autunno (in the Fall) to cominciare (begin) our Italian language lessons. We shared cibo (food) and parlato (spoke) Italian. I first studied Italian over 43 years ago in high school. Our Italian teacher drilled the class in conjugating verbs and learning vocabulary. He encouraged us to speak and write in Italian. We were immersed completely into the Italian culture and geography. I recall my teacher as energetic, creative and made learning Italian fun. He would enjoy sharing his Italian music records in class. My parents immigrated to Canada (Niagara Falls, ON) in 1957 from the Friuli–Venezia-Giulia region of northeastern Italy. Growing up they spoke to family in their regional dialect of Friulano which was not the standard Italian that I aspired to speak. We were encouraged to stay connected with our cultural roots and be proud of our family’s Italian heritage. I realized how much of the language I forgot after years of not speaking Italian. When I worked in the restaurant industry near Gemona, Italy in my early 20s, I grappled and struggled with the Italian language. Currently I am an online student of La Scuola Italiana (The Italian Language School) program provided by the Kelowna Canadian Italian Club. In my second enrolment of an eight week session I continue to imparare (learn) from the other students. The instructor provides correction and clarifies the grammar in a friendly, impactful and encouraging way. “To learn Italian at any level takes courage and commitment. If you continue to practice and put the effort in, you will make a difference in speaking Italian confidently” says Marianna Pezzoli, La Scuola Italiana online instructor. I am determined, motivated and up to the challenge in learning Italian. I dug out my Italian grammar books, sourced some Italian language podcasts and purchased travel books. It’s fun to also listen to Italian internet radio stations. I make phone calls to elder relatives to practice my Italian. Sometimes our conversations flip between Friulano, Italian and English. My goal is to become proficient and fluent in speaking and writing in Italian. I have made a personal commitment to study Italian daily to improve my Italian language skills. I want to learn about my heritage and the diverse culture and history of all the regions of Italy. The Italian language exudes passion and expression. I love listening to it. When I hear people speaking Italian, it makes me feel like I am a casa (at home) with my family again.
Messi leaves Barcelona After 21 years of making history and winning trophies, Lionel Messi will not play in a Barcelona shirt for the first time since he was 13 years old. The shocking separation between club and player is the ripple effect of Barcelona’s financial issues in the past few years and the salary cap imposed by La Liga on the participating teams. Messi’s wages are a massive fee to cover yearly, as they should be, but due to the latest signings of Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero, Barca was unable to make it all work financially, despite Messi willing to take half the original salary discussed. The official announcement was sent out by the club on all social media platforms, and it immediately caused shock and panic among journalists, critics, and general fans. At first it was all about the memories of Messi playing for Barca, but that inevitably turned into speculation as to where the arguably best player in the history of the sport would play in September. The first rumours linked Messi with PSG with a monster contract of 35 to 40 million euros yearly but Manchester City and Chelsea also seemed plausible options for Messi. However, City had just signed Aston Villa’s talent Jack Grealish for 117 million euros, and Chelsea had been heavily linked with Lukaku for a fee of 130 million, meaning that their budget would not be as inviting as PSG’s. Messi himself remained quiet on social media until he announced that he would be holding a press conference at the Camp Nou on August 8th, where he would explain in detail all the background issues to the contract negotiations. “I have never imagined this goodbye, I didn’t know it would be like this”, said Messi in tears. “My new contract was ready and I wanted to stay”, he explained, “but I couldn’t sign because of the La Liga rules”. It’s a shame Messi couldn’t say goodbye to the fans either, to whom he has brought so much joy and created so many memories during the years. “I imagined I would leave with a full stadium saying goodbye to everyone”, he said. After Leo finished talking, a long applause rose from the crowd of players and staff that were in the room. An applause worth more than a thousand words, followed by pictures and hugs with all the friends. True fans wish all the best for Messi going forward in his amazing career, wherever that may be. by Pietro Arrigoni
-------------------------------- Euro2021 was a memorable tournament. It had all the classic thrills of a major international tournament, mixed with various upsets and an incredible run from the Italian team to win it all. Despite coming off such a positive streak of results, many didn’t believe Italy to be a favorite as they headed into the tournament. And, surprisingly enough, many still wouldn’t consider Italy a favorite after they swept their group stage clean with three wins, seven goals for, and zero against. The real turning point for Mancini’s team was surely the win against Belgium, who on paper was definitely the most talent filled squad, alongside the British team. In a thrilling quarter final match, Italy took the win by 2-1 with goals from Barella and Insigne, while Lukaku cut Italy’s advantage in half before the half time, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Azzurri’s charge. After having struggled against a very well built Austrian team in the round of 16, many remained skeptical about the abilities and grit that the Italians possessed, but it was definitely the win against Belgium that put the doubts out, and that made the Italian people believe that this team could actually go all the way. Similarly to what was happening with the Italians, the English team also began to believe that they could win the tournament, and so the familiar slogan “It’s coming home” became the saying on everyone’s mouth all the way up to the final. After Italy and England beat Spain and Denmark in the semi finals, the two powerhouses were ready to fight for the cup at Wembley Stadium in London. The british arrogance got the best of the italians initially, as Luke Shaw bagged the earliest ever goal in a Euro final in the second minute, but Italy was able to keep their composure and control the possession and pace of the game until they equalized with Bonucci later in the second half. Both teams then continued to play their game but rather avoided any risks, and so the game continued into extra time and then all the way to penalties. Italy’s goalkeeper, Gigio Donnarumma, stopped up hugely in this part of the game, saving Sancho’s and Saka’s penalties after Belotti, Rashford, and Jorginho had missed theirs. His save on Saka’s shot handed Italy the cup, and as a haunting veil of silence laid over Wembley, the streets of Italy filled with fans ready to celebrate the latest success of their national team. |
