------------------------------------------------------ The last matchday of the 2020-21 season, played between the 22nd and 23rd of May, brings this year’s Series A competition to a close, and gives the 20 teams that competed for the trophy some time to rest. Despite being the last matchday, this weekend was extremely important for a few teams who would be fighting for spots in the Champions League of next year alongside Inter and Atalanta, who already qualified. Speaking of Inter, Conte’s men can finally get their hands on the Series A trophy that they have long been waiting for after beating Udinese 5-1 at San Siro with goals by Eriksen, Young, Martinez, Lukaku, and a great goal by Perisic. For the first time in over a year, 1000 fans filled the stands at San Siro to watch their players celebrate the 19th Scudetto of Inter’s history. About an hour's drive from Milan, in Bergamo, Milan was getting ready to take on Atalanta, revelation of this year’s campaign and already qualified for next year’s CL. The Milan players, fully aware that their destiny depended on a win in this game, knew that a loss could end their CL hopes for next year and promote Juventus or Napoli in third place. Under immense pressure Milan was able to deliver by winning 2-0 with two penalties converted by Kessie, a crucial player for Milan this year. With the three points acquired, Milan mathematically qualifies for the CL. In Napoli however, Gattuso’s men take the lead in the game with a goal from a corner kick, but they then let Verone equalise after dropping their focus and getting caught with a ball over the top finished by Faraoni. With the tie in the bag, Verona were happy to defend and fend off Napoli;s attacks, which resulted in Napoli missing the qualifying margin for the CL. In Bologna there really was no match between Juventus and Bologna. The Bianconeri take a super early lead with Chiesa, leader of the team for this year, and then continue to score with Morata, Rabiot, and then Morata again in the second half. Despite the game being over before the half, Bolong managed to strike a single goal with Orsolini in the 85th minute. Milan and Juventus are then the two teams alongside Inter and Atakanta who will represent Italy in the best competition in Europe for next season. Rightfully earned, the two teams demonstrated to be able to keep their calm and deliver when necessary and under pressure, which is an important skill to have when playing in against the best of the best in CL. Napoli ended their season gutted, knowing that a spot in CL was there for the taking. Along with this, the President De Laurentis has announced that the team and Gennaro Gattuso are partying ways, and that the Italian manager will not be coaching the Partenopei next season. The three teams who are relegated to serie B are Benevento, Crotone, and Parma, while Roma, Lazio, and Napoli will play in Europa League. Without a doubt, the 2020-21 season was interesting and full of emotional battles that will be remembered for years. And, this season marks the end of an era undoubtedly dominated by Juventus, who, after nine consecutive Scudettis, makes room for Inter to have their glory by taking their 19th Scudetto. The millions of fans who supported their respective teams throughout the year are now all going to cheer for the same team, The Azzurri, who will compete in the European Cup. Then, the transfer market will determine who will stay and who will go, and with many speculations rising it looks set to be a thrilling transfer window. by Marianna Pezzoli (English version below)
The history of the Italian peninsula is fascinating and full of events, wars, conquests and invasions. Different peoples have contributed to shape what today is the State of Italy. From the ancient Etruscans, to the glorious Romans, from the barbarian invasions to the dark Middle Ages, from the city states to the invasion of the great European states, first Spanish, French and Austrian later, in more than two thousand years of history Italy has taken shape of the state we know today. The shape of the boot is known by everyone in every part of the world and easily recognized by astronauts from the space station. The signs of this millenary history can be seen everywhere ..... in the cities, in the monuments, in the streets, in the churches ..... but Italy is celebrated above all on 2 June, Republic Day. But what exactly is celebrated? Let's see what happened on June 2nd 75 years ago. Italy is still a Republic today, and has been proclaimed as such since June 2, 1946, when Italians and, for the first time ever, Italian women voted for a referendum that would change the political-administrative organization of the boot. Since the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy on 17 March 1861, Italy has been a Monarchy, ruled by the Savoy family. Statues and references to great kings and queens are found throughout the peninsula. For example, in my city Milan, the Gallery that leads from the Duomo to Piazza della Scala, the famous opera house, is named after Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy, the first King of the Kingdom of Italy. And also, in Piazza del Duomo there is a beautiful bronze equestrian statue, also of the first King. Not to forget that the famous Pizza Margherita, with the colors of the Italian flag, white for mozzarella, green for basil and red for tomato, was named in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy visiting Naples at the beginning of the last century. The royals of Italy are buried in the Pantheon in Rome. The Italians were deeply attached to their royals, but the end of the war and probably the involvement of the royals with fascism was one of the reasons why people decided to change the form of state from monarchy to republic. And since then, 75 years ago, on June 2nd we celebrate the Republic Day. The celebrations mainly take place in the capital, Rome, but in truth it is celebrated throughout the peninsula and by many Italian communities abroad. There are several symbols that recur during the celebrations: the Frecce Tricolori, the parade along the Imperial Forums in Rome, the deposition of the flowers by the President on the tomb of the unknown soldier on the Altare della Patria, and tricolor flags at all the windows and balconies, and the Mameli anthem as the national anthem. Happy Republic Day everyone!!! by Elvia Picco
How much do you know about your Italian heritage and culture? In my case, my parents emigrated from northern Italy to Canada in 1955. I was born in Canada and met my maternal and paternal grandmothers only once when they visited us in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Apart from that, I know little about my grandparents and their lives in Italy. My interest in wanting to learn more about my family’s ancestry is the reason why I took an eight-week online genealogy course through the Kelowna Canadian Italian Club. The course has given me the inspiration, knowledge and tools to be able to research a host of websites and databases containing historical records about family members. As the month of June is Italian Heritage Month in Canada, I am excited to continue this journey to use these resources to build a family tree and connect with my past. It is also a time to recognize and acknowledge the rich culture and heritage of Italian Canadians and their ongoing contributions to building a stronger, vibrant and more inclusive Canada. To commemorate your Italian heritage, take this time to learn and research the long history and achievements of Italian Canadians. This is the full video of the official apology to Canadian Italians in the House of Commons on May 27, 2021 for their treatment during World War II. All parties were unanimous in supporting the apology and spoke. The clip is about 41 minutes long.
President Rosann Nanci responded on behalf of the Kelowna Canadian Italian Club: The Kelowna Canadian Italian Club would like to thank the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau for his heartfelt apology to the Italian Canadian population. Past wrongs are difficult to correct especially after so much time has passed. The original men who were detained have all passed away, leaving their families to cope with the remaining ramifications of these actions. This apology also brings to light the shame felt by the entire Italo-Canadese population which were felt not only by the people of the time, but for subsequent generations who had difficulty holding their heads high. So many instances of verbal abuse, acts of violence, stereotypes, caricatures, and downright ethnic racism were experienced by the general Italian Canadian population, that it is difficult for many to put into mere words the shame and anger they felt. Italian Canadians are a proud people who contributed to the growth and security of this county and it is felt that this apology begins the journey back to a place where we can be proud of our accomplishments and continue to offer our contributions to our country. THE ROSSELLINIS Online Film Screening and Q&A Revered as one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century, Roberto Rossellini left an indelible mark on cinema and an enormous inheritance of family conflict. The Rossellinis is a compelling look inside a complicated cinema dynasty forced into group therapy by one of their own. With never-before-seen archival footage and an absorbing conversation with his famed aunt, actress Isabella Rossellini, this family drama offers an abundance of compelling insights into their relationships, revealing old secrets and tragic moments in their lives. As swingers, this loving and deeply entwined couple allows one another to freely explore their desires and sexual cravings with trust and respect. With uncanny beauty in the camerawork, the director and cinematographer Mauro Russo Rouge's lens leaves nothing to the imagination. Up close and personal, we plunge into the back rooms of clubs, the intimacy of homes and the wide-open spaces of the night skies, bearing witness to the couple's carnal pursuits. But even the deepest relationships and strongest connections are at times tested. Will their hunger for the taste of others ultimately drive a wedge between them? Available April 29 - May 9, 2021 click here to purchase tickets MOLECULES Online Film Screening In February 2020, filmmaker Andrea Segre was in Venice when a still-mysterious virus froze the city before his eyes. Piazza San Marco emptied, the logger-jammed Grand Canal went still, and spaces filled instead with a strange, hollow quiet. Lockdown had given the town back to nature and returned something unexpected to Segre as well—memories of his late father, Ulderico. Raised in Venice, he was as reserved in his career as a molecular physicist as he was with his children. Using old Super 8 family films and an unanswered letter he wrote to his father decades earlier, Segre's captivating investigation into his father's silences and absences beautifully dissolve into the emptiness of Venice itself. Through this arrested landscape stripped down to its natural frailties and lack of solidity, Segre unearths the roots of his father's and his own unease. Capturing an extraordinary experience for a city and for a son, Molecules makes real those things one can't see but knows exist. Available April 29 - May 9, 2021 click here to purchase tickets WE ARE THE THOUSAND Online Film Screening and Q&A The spirit and culture of rock 'n' roll can always be traced back to the fans. For a group of Italian friends, their passion for this genre of music sparked a novel idea: they put a call out to gather a thousand musicians to play music together, in hopes of coaxing the iconic band Foo Fighters to come to perform a concert in their small town. One of the most curious and ambitious "band wanted" signs ever turns out to be a bigger success than its organizers dreamed. The Rockin' 1000 group's collective rendition of "Learn to Fly" goes massively viral, catching the eye of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl himself. What started out as a shot in the dark ends up creating literally the largest rock band in the world, showcasing just how much music can unite and bring joy to all those who are willing to listen. The Italian Cultural Institute Toronto is pleased to support the participation of Montreal-born Italian artist Cindi Emond at the 2021 edition of the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival. The virtual photography exhibit For All The “I Love You’s”, We Forgot To Say, is also sponsored by the Canadian Embassy in Rome. Shot in Abruzzo, Italy in the abandoned village of Frattura Vecchia devastated by an earthquake in 1915, this series documents how the histories of migration to escape the poverty and hardships of central and southern Italian towns are deeply felt to this day. Focusing on the resilience of remote rural communities facing harsh conditions, adversity and the complexity of their relationship with the land, the series examines Italian heritage, the persistence of cultural traditions and national identity.
