THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1:00PM MST
Online

On the occasion of the 700 years from Dante's death (1321-2021), the Italian Studies program of the University of Calgary presents a talk by Joseph Luzzi, Professor of Comparative Literature, Italian Studies (Bard College). The event is presented by the University of Calgary’s School of Languages, Linguistics, Literature, and Cultures and takes place under the auspices of the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver.

What makes Dante's “Divine Comedy” so essential to our lives today, even though it was written seven centuries ago? What can Dante's "dark wood", the space of crisis Dante describes in the Inferno, teach us about our own pandemic world?

In this presentation, Joseph Luzzi, Professor of Comparative Literature at Bard College and the author of In a Dark Wood: What Dante Taught Me About Grief, Healing, and the Mysteries of Love, will explore the fascinating realm of Dante's epic poem in all its cultural and historical richness, as he considers Dante's relation to his beloved hometown of Florence, his lacerating experience of exile, and his lifelong devotion to his muse Beatrice, among many other issues.
Above all, Professory Luzzi will show how and why readers throughout the world can access Dante "without footnotes" and discover the ways his timeless wisdom and insights can enhance our everyday lives.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
